A Tucker man is awaiting sentencing following his conviction on all five charges against him last week in connection with an armed robbery and shooting at the Golden Pantry on Hwy. 72 in Hull last September.
Ousman Nyane, of Arbor Circle in Tucker, was convicted on one count each of attempted robbery, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of tools used in the commission of a crime (in this case, body armor) and aggravated assault (for shooting and wounding a store clerk).
A jury of 12 found Nyane guilty on Wednesday, June 4, after hearing testimony from officers and from the shooting victim in Madison County Superior Court.
Captain Mike Benner, chief deputy of the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, said law officers ability to use the surveillance tape to identify the body armor, which was visible during Nyane’s struggle with the store clerk, and match it to armor found at the time and place of Nyane’s arrest was crucial to the conviction, according to comments by jurors following the trial’s conclusion.
Another suspect, Elberton resident Corrie Deshane Norman, 27, of 114B Auld Avenue, was charged with armed robbery and aggravated assault, but has not been brought to trial yet.
While Norman was arrested the same day as the robbery and shooting, Nyane remained on the loose for a month until he was apprehended by sheriff’s officers, along Georgia Bureau of Investigation and U. S. Marshal officers at his girlfriend’s Lithonia apartment. Nyane was apprehended without incident while hiding in a shower.
