The Madison County Sheriff’s Office arrested five people Monday at five separate business locations for selling alcohol to an underage minor.

According to the sheriff’s office, the arrests began around 11 a.m. when an underage “confidential informant,” accompanied by an investigator, went into the Danielsville BP station on Hwy. 29 North and purchased a six pack of Bud Light with a marked $20 bill. Deputies then arrested the clerk, Tanya Renee Cromer, 38, P.O. Box 833, Danielsville, and charged her with selling alcohol to a minor.

Following that arrest, officers went to Royal Foods in Danielsville; Quick Pick on Hwy. 72 in Colbert; Tiny Town on Hwy. 72 in Carlton and to Diamond Hill Grocery on Hwy. 29 North. Arrests were made at each of these locations.

The clerks arrested after selling alcohol to the informant were: Mary Lowe Watkins, 125 Lanier Pruitt Road, Anderson, SC; Valerie Ann Teet, 1587 Holman Autry Road, Danielsville; Richard Vernon Miller, 706 Broad River Road, Carlton and Michael Daniel Nash, 206 Diamond Hill Neese Road, Colbert.

Deputies also arrested an 18 year old on Sunday, Jan. 31, after responding to a call about a camp fire close to a residence with what appeared to be underage drinking in progress. Jakob Darrin Dwayne Saxon, 18, 1330 Holman Autry Road, Danielsville, was arrested and charged with one count of underage possession of alcohol after deputy Josh Smith found him at the campfire with three open cans of alcohol.

Sheriff Kip Thomas said that he appreciates all the county businesses that follow the law on alcohol sales and added that his department will conduct random checks on businesses throughout the year.

I predict someone will write a comment on this story and complain that now all the tax money on sales of beer to underage consumers will be going to Franklin County. There will be a demand to recall Kip Thomas and an outcry over how his deputies handled this sting operation.

After all, underage drinking is a time honored tradition in Madison County. Remember Parham's beer store, anyone? Oh, now I am dating myself.

First of all what does Franklin County have to do with anything? secondly if they do have anything to do with any of this....you have just tipped off law enforcement in Franklin County (which isnt a bad thing)so expect them to be doing the same investigation soon!!! Gosh, are we a smart one or what? GET A LIFE and an EDUCATION!!!

I apologize for my dry sense of humor. I forgot that ignorant people don't get it.

Substitue Jackson County if you think it might be easier to buy alcohol there. However, it was always easy to buy liquor in Canon - Franklin County. Maybe it still is.

For your last question, I don't know if "we" are a smart one or not. Despite my Madison County public school education, I think I am, how about you?

Sir/Madam,

I believe idiot is spelled with one "t".

And, I do work for the sheriff and thank you for the compliment that Sheriff Thomas doesn't have "idiotts" working for him.

The Sheriff is doing a great job and has a very competent staff.

I believe if you will settle in, we will all be pleased and can make a unified effort to build Madison County into its fullest, positive potential.

the sheriff is a retard.his deputies are retards.peoples homes are being broke into and there property taken and this is what they concentrate on.there is no doubt that if the recall doesnt happen then he will come under heavy opposition and will be out at the end of his term.

Good job Kip,Keep up the good work!If you keep doing this your going to catch alot more than that,like video poker,real poker,selling on Sunday's,and who know's what else!
I think this kind of action should have been done years ago!!!Lowe busted a few place's in the county for video poker right before election time,I wonder if they started the video poker right before election time,or was it there all the time? HMMMM?
Don't stop now,keep it going all the time and clean up this county.

I think he did a great job. This is the message we need to send to underage children and to people selling it to them. I think Kip is doing a wonderful job and just in the short time he has been in office I have seen a major improvement in the way the Sheriff's Office has operated. I say keep up the good work the Police are finally doing there jobs.

As far as the tax money goes as much beer as we grown ups drink with not much else to do when your pinching pennies I don't think we will see that much of a difference.

Way to go to our new sheriff!
This is the second feather for your cap you've earned from me. The first being the dog that was given back to his dog-fighter owner and now making it harder for our kids to maintain their addiction to alcohol.
I'd really like to see some Twelve Step programs at the schools.

Thank you to the MC DEPUTIES for doing such a great job! To #4 Proud citizen(most of the time)- please become an informed citizen. There have been several busts over the years for video poker & illegal payouts in Hull/D'ville, illegal alcohol sales at the same locations, illegal tobacco & porn sales in D'ville, Sunday sales all over MC, just to name a few. It's all in the Journal archives. So, HMMMM,I would say it was there all the time. Some involving the same deputies that keep at it, on behalf of you & me.
So, #5 chris Jones, they are the ones out there doing what they know how to do best. The difference is...it's a new sheriff so you're paying closer attention to see what's going on, he's making sure you see/hear about it all so you form the desired opinion. While the sheriff might assign the task at hand & be the one quoted in the paper, it's all taken care of by the deputies (the little guys) while he sits in the office. Let's give credit where it's due.

Thats how it goes everywhere the little guy does the work and the big guy gets the credit. So I'll say it like this thanks to the MC Sheriff's department and I hope it's not like every where else around here and smoke and mirrors. I hope the Kip is putting pressure on his new staff to stop turning there check.

Thats the beauty of being the sheriff. If good things happen within the county you get the credit, if bad things happen, you also get the credit. If I am not mistaken, we have one sitting in the oval office, taking all the credit while all "the little guys" are working like busy little bees. In the end, he will take the fall if he doesn't produce. So, Kip, congrats on this one.

No obvious improvements have been seen, did you just start reading the papers? These are small things that have been done in the few weeks of office. It will be a few weeks and this will be forgotten and the selling will resume. Oh, by the way Charlie, I have heard about the "two pending lawsuits since January" so, I agree with you, our tax dollars are about to be spent on bad decision making skills or lack of! I find it interesting that when I have submitted comments before with knowledge of the true facts, they are mpt posted to this blog. I will be interested to see if this one gets posted since it contains another truth.

Always good to continue good enforcement practices no matter who is in office. I commend all who were involved in the underage stings. Hope they go out and get the ones they missed next time. The paper should always publish these stories for no other purpose than to discourage the underage consumers who want to buy alcohol. It will be harder to catch the adults who also buy/give to underage kids. Gotta start somewhere. Let's see where this goes.

Glad to see you're informed. I agree w/ you re:truthful comments not being posted so I am glad to see your truth has been told. "Bad decision making skills or lack of" effect MC citizens & staff's ability to do their job. As in my previous post, he's making sure people see/hear about it all so they form his desired opinion. Think back to campaign promises & see what he delivers. MC don't be fooled by smoke & mirrors. The Journal archives tell it all. To #8.2 new guy, at least be honest while putting a feather in your cap. I wouldn't say 9, give or take a few including admin. jobs out of 30 + or - is most of Lowes old staff. Two "new guys" having been fired by Lowe only to be rehired by Thomas. As taxpayers we're entitled to know what's really happening but we're also obligated to hold officials accountable. I can only hope that this truth will also be told.

very personally and I can promise you he is not sitting around
waiting on every little thing to happen so he can make
comparisons to all this mess. I did not vote for Kip and if
he makes it to another election I will not vote for him again
but that doesn't matter right now he is our sheriff and that's
life so we might as well get over it and try to let the man
do his job!

Job well done on this! Anytime we can bust people for allowing
underage alcohol consumption I call that a good day.

I must say you are correct on this one. If more people in the county would stop holding grudges about their "man" not winning an election this county would be a better place. He is our sheriff, good or bad, let's support him.
