Madison County commissioners agreed Monday to maintain a contract with Whitworth Detention Center out of Hartwell for two inmate work crews, who pick up trash along county roads and county facilities.

They also pick up recyclable items for the county school system. The board considered eliminating one of the crews as a cost-cutting measure, but the group noted that the inmates work for pennies on the hour and that finding cheaper labor for necessary trash pickup jobs would not be easy.

The BOC agreed to keep the current $39,500 contract for crews at least through the end of the fiscal year, which runs through June.

You ain't going to find nobody who will work for what inmates do? Because they don't have a choice. The prisons and the county make the choice and tell the inmates where they are going to work. When did they start paying INMATES anyway/I thought that picking up trash and working was part of their prison sentence. Do they get promoted and regular pay raises like we do too?

my thoughts are they should make all the inmates work for free all the time.what is the 39000 for the van gas?

When? It was about the time that the United States government started giving a care about people's civil rights. Being an inmate doesn't make a person a slave - that would be against the law.

Sardoic Veracity,Against the Law,Hold on back up a minute. Being an inmate means they broke the law in the first place. That should be punishment for the crime they did. And how come YOU have the nerve to write in on all the news telling us how we should be thinking.I see how you think and NO THANK YOU.. I think you just want something to argue about. Your probably one of those old men who has nothing better to do,One who used to sit at the Bread Basket and drink coffee and smoke? Now since you can't smoke inside no more.All you got to do is sit here and read tell us how wrong we are.

I can answer your argument with one time honoroed cliche: Two wrongs doesn't make a right.
If you think it "should be" punishment for the crime, write your Congressmen. It honestly doen't take a lot of "nerve" to write onto the blogs about these news stories - especially when people like you have such inane ideas about right and wrong.
I don't know who you "probably are"... but I haven't had the time to sit around the Breadbasket with you. The only time I will tell you that you are wrong.. is when you are wrong. Sometimes the truth hurts, I suppose.

Talking about "Pork" and wastefull spending, here we go again, thanks BOC and to our new dumd as a sack or rocks Sheriff. Hello, don't we have inmates that can service Madison County. I Beleive we could pay another deputy to handle such details, maybe even two deputies. Come on Skip, Wake up Anthony. Matter of fact, Pay me 40 grand a year, I'll pick up trash on the roads every day. Yep, I'm still laughing.

Here we go again let's load up and take shots at everyone from the Sheriff to the Chairman. It amazes me how many ill-informed people we have in this county, to lazy to go the meetings and get correct information but quick to shot from the hip with your dumb remarks. The inmates are actually an assest to the county in major cost savings. At the last BOC meeting I listed to Ms. Webb give a very detailed recap on what these inmates do. They just don't pick up trash on the road sides, but work in the courthouse, library,Senior Center, transfer station and that's just to name a few of the locations in the county. They are paid roughly 30 cents and hour if I understood correctly. Also I must say Ms.Webb does a very good job utilizing this resource of men. If we had to hire people to do the job's these men are doing we all know we would not get the effort these men put into there job because they are just happy to be outside and working, and to replace them with county employees would be a little more than 30 cents an hour!!! As for the Sheriff I'm sure he would like to put inmates to work so they would have less time to sit and think about what problem or law suit they could create next. But unfortunately his inmates in most cases haven't been sentenced yet and are allowed to sit on there sorry butt and watch tv. Get the big picture before you run off will bad information. Oh! by the way we are the only county that doesn't have to pay for the van transportation cost. What a deal.

Thank you for your informative message.I shall start attending the BOC meetings & get the facts instead of reading all the other "hog wash" about our county. I truly believe it would benefit all of us to attend these meetings & learn what our elected officials are up against... trying to save the tax payers money & still get the most for our money. I would think that the inmates DO NOT actually receive the money paid but probably goes to help with funding the prison, food, medical, housing, etc. costs at the prisons since State funding is almost cut out completely. I'm sure before too long Madison County will have to trim their budget even more. Look at Barrow County & others who are laying off people, mandatory furloughs, etc. Give Chairman Dove some credit. I'm sure he is crunching numbers in all areas to help the county survive this economic diaster we are in.Let's stop bashing our elected officials & work with them.Chairman Dove has a good head & will do the very best he can during these hard times for all citizens of our fine county. Think about it...There is no "I" in "Team" work.

Team work my butt! When has politics ever had anything to do with team work. You must be living in a different county than I am. I hope in time things will get better in this county. But at the moment it's still business as usual.Everyone trying to protect and cover their butts.Wake up and look around what is going on in this county.

Say what you want, Just like I can say what I want. We can clearly save...The new sheriff still doesnt have a clue, and never will. With the economy like it is, take a look at 40 grand a year, I'm sure Kip could find ways to employ two to three retired peace officers to maintain a trash detail , for instance weekends only, that would open new jobs, yet still save Madison County Money. Maybe i did Jump slightly, He made promises to help save, yet because he is lost in la la land, he we go, No matter what you say, forgett about it, talking to you is like talking to a sack of rocks, so, shut up....By the way, I kow the picture, been their and done that.

To Sardonic Veracity I guess you know all about writing into blogs?I have seen your name on all kinds of different stories.You probably think everyone in prison is innocent? Ok lets say someone was convicted of a crime against you would you still feel this way? Probably not you would want the worse punishment possible. And when you found out they were getting paid for what they did.You can't tell me you wouldn't be mad.If you say you wouldn't be mad then you are not from the south.

I don't believe inmates should be allowed on school
property while children are present.

Do they check to see if these inmates are child molesters
or sex offenders before they allow them to be on school
property?

I understand these are trustees, but at some point and
time sex offenders become trustees too.
