Comer man charged with aggravated assault

Gilbert Bernard Saylors, 52, of 888 Clairmont Avenue, was also charged with obstruction of an officer and possession of firearms by a convicted felon.

According to Comer police chief Brent Zellner, the incident began on Friday night when Saylors allegedly fired a shotgun at his son and missed. When Comer police arrived, Saylors reportedly took off into the woods. Comer police called for back up, which included sheriff’s deputies, Oglethorpe County officers and a canine officer from Elbert County, but Saylors was not located.

Police were called Saturday evening to Clairmont Avenue, where Saylors was reportedly arguing with his mother and he was taken into custody at that time.

While conducting a search of the home for the shotgun, Chief Zellner seized a large quantity of crack cocaine. The shotgun was not found.

Saylors’ son, Gilbert Bernard Saylors Jr., 25, of 900 Clairmont Avenue, Comer, was charged Sunday evening on a hold for Clarke County.

Zellner said charges are pending on the drug case, but no warrants had been issued as of press time.
