With or without financial assistance, Colbert’s installation of an eight-inch water line under Hwy. 72 and the railroad can’t wait much longer Mayor John Waggoner says.
“Whether we get a grant or not, we need to go ahead, within a few months, and proceed — borrowing money if we have to — to put the waterline under the railroad,” he told council members Monday.
Waggoner expects running the line underneath the highway and railroad will cost between $125,000 and $150,000.
The city still awaits word on grant applications for water improvements in the city.
However, Waggoner noted that Colbert has SPLOST funds available for water projects.
The line is needed to improve water flow for fire protection on the southern portion of town.
Colbert leaders have also discussed building a new water tank south of the highway and railroad to improve water flow and capacity.
However, the waterline is the more pressing issue, Waggoner said.
“We need to go ahead and get a waterline under the highway and the railroad so this side of the town can have a decent fire flow,” he said.
