Drivers aren’t obeying the 45 mph speed limit on Hull’s main thoroughfare, the city’s mayor said.

“We have legally named Hwy. 72 “The Hwy. 72 Autobahn,” mayor Paul Elkins said, “because of the excessive speed that is displayed by too many motorists.”

That’s partly due an absence of speed limit signs, which were removed by the state DOT when the highway was widened to four lanes earlier this decade.

The city has requested those 45 mph speed limit signs be returned.

“Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I expect people to do 45 mph, because that ain’t going to happen,” Elkins said. “But if we can slow them down a little bit … because somebody is going to get hurt out there.”

Elkins commended the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for slowing speeders on Glenn Carrie Road, a connector between Hwy. 72 and Hwy. 29.

Several have been ticketed, he said, reducing the average speed on that road substantially.

“They have done a superb job over there … The speed limit has probably dropped 20 mph,” Elkins said.

"somebody's GOING to get hurt" which I take to mean no one HAS been hurt

The speed limit on a 4 lane hwy should be 55. Forcing people to slam on brakes, slow suddenly actually causes cars to bunch up and accidents to happen. I'm all for 25-35mph on Glen Carrie. The state highway should be 55, as evidenced by the mayor's inference that no one has been hurt.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If people aren't getting hurt, don't change it. It's clearly working as it is.

By your analysis the speed limit on Epps Bridge should be 55 mph...just one example of many which would demonstrate your shortsighted vision of reality. The 45 mph through Hull should be enforced preferably using traffic cameras...sadly unavailable...so instead move the Madison County mounties randomly from the highway 72 to highway 29 connector.

You are comparing Apples to Oranges..Epps Bridge is not a highway with very few entrances and exits. There are literally hundreds of businesses entrance / exit points.

Again, per the mayor's inference, there are not currently people being hurt. And you can check with GSP for stats on accidents on Hwy. 72 near Hull caused by excessive speed. I'm not aware of even one. Occasionally there is a fender bender due to the light at the rail crossing due to human error.

The traffic light seems to do a pretty good job of reducing speed when it turns red, as people have to stop. It doesn't make sense to reduce speed from 55, to 35, on a 4 lane highway where there are no businesses. The only business in Hull with an entrance / exit on 72 is the Golden Pantry. That's it. One. Hull is only a city in someone's imagination, there's no "town" unlike Colbert and Comer where there are towns and it makes sense to reduce speed due to the high number of entrances / exits and businesses.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If there are not a high number of accidents being caused by excessive speed on 72 in Hull, it only proves that it is safer to allow traffic to flow than it is to force cars to bunch together with meaningless reduction in speed. Bunching traffic together causes accidents, not speed.

Sounds like the mayor just wants another revenue stream.

anon...you neglected the most dangerous spot...the US Post Office just past the red light. The primary reason for no fatalities is the light traffic on route 72. Though you mention the few number of businesses...again neglecting used car lots etc., you fail to note the number of cross streets between the red light and Clarke County. I further suspect that the speed limit is set by the state in any event. I appreciate the opportunity to set straight misconceptions.

The number of exits on Rt 72 per mile is not small, the distance within Hull, Madison County is not long. The speed limit should be 45. The speed limit should be enforced. There would not be a revenue stream if people who believe regulations refer to others rather than themselves. Calculate the amount increased time you would spend in Hull at 45 mph vs 55 mph and you will see that it is not worth the additional danger. Only an impossible ego can require such meager time savings.

It shouldn't take someone getting hurt to make a change, this coming from someone that was recently involved in an accident in that very insection. I don't think the driver of the other car intended on hitting me ,and running a red light but thats where you say accidents happen, but the impact might not have totaled the other drivers car had she been going a little slower, and my car wouldn't have needed major repairs. I'm very thankful that neither of us were hurt.

In some ways i agree with you and in others I dont. If
this person did not pay attention to the red light, how
do you expect this person to pay attention to a speed
limit sign. They would of been speeding i'm sure just as they
did not stop for a red light. I cross over hwy 72 every morning
and every afternoon and have never had any problems with
speeders. Yes there is a post office as well as residents on
this road but why drop the limit to 45? I think 55 is
a good speed limit. Its not the number of the speed limit,
it is the driver.

Exactly the points I was trying to make. If someone is going to run a red-light, they certainly aren't going to obey a sign. The sign only forces good drivers to slow down to 35 mph whether the light is green OR red, resulting in even MORE rear collisions from the speeding motorist ignoring the light AND the sign.

All you have accomplished with the sign is that before the sign you would only have a rear collision when the speeding motorist ignored the red light. With the lower speed limit and signs, now you will have rear collisions when the light is red, AND when the light is green. Moronic.

well if you haven't had any trouble with speeding, then one morning when you have time come on down to intersection at the end of the colbert school road. Traffic is impossible there. sometimes you sit for 10 minutes at a time to get out and when you do they pass you going atleast 60 mph. a caution light is definately need there.

well the thing is its only a matter of time before an accident will actually occur on 72 due to the fact that during the morning and evening hours you see people going 70 and 80 mph.The reason im concerned with the if it aint broke dont fix it response is that my grandmother lives on 72 in hull and drives everyday and its only a matter of time before someone going this fast hits her coming out of the driveway.This statement is just plain ignorant.

Well if they drop the speed limit to 35-45 and put cops there to enforce it? It won't be long and they will declare Hwy.72 in Hull as a speed trap. I have seen it happen before and the cops get in trouble.
Let them go ahead and set up a speed trap then if they get pulled from Hwy.72 in Hull it will serve them right.If people know they can't be stopped by Madison Co. through Hull they will fly through there

I'm one of the three chosen deputies to enforce highway safety here in the county. For years now, HWY 72 has been wide open with reckless drivers, drunk drivers, super aggressive speeders with no regard to anyone. Our new Sheriff has a plan to reduce this danger which in return saves lives. We work aggressively to target those traveling at speeds of 10 mph or more. Most drivers stopped are given verbal or written warnings. However, their are drivers that meet our weekly quota for citations issued. We are here to serve and to protect, we are here to save lives. I'm glad Sheriff Thomas has taken a firm stand on issuing traffic tickets, thus allowing us to do our jobs, unlike the prior admin under Sheriff Lowe whom didnt like for citations to be issued by deputies. He felt the State Patrol could handle our highways, which I disagree, because while I am on patrol or answering calls, I can also stop speeder and ticket him or her, then carry on my other duties. Therefore, making Madison County Highways safer for all of us, me as a traffic deputy meeting my quota, doing my job, making my boss, you're New Sheriff happy and proud to be doing the job you elected him to do. Plus 15 tickets a week per deputy is not that hard to do. There are many days when I can write 20 or 30 if I choose. OK, enough said, just remember, buckle up, watch your speed, and drive safely. Do you really expect us to drive slower than 10 mph? 10 mph seems pretty slow to me. I don't believe the writer of the above nonsense is an actual deputy. I certainly hope he isn't!

As of Monday of last week, there were only 2. So that only leaves the other two Deputies. Wonder who you could be???

Learn to Force a Recall Election

I always thought one of the biggest failings of the former Sherrif's reign was that too much emphasis was on deputies being traffic cops and not enough in cracking down on other crimes.

a target on his back and would be gone in flash! The
ticket I got for speeeding will be disputed and you
better believe the "wife" not getting a ticket will be
my bread and butter, why should I have to pay if she
does not? The deputy should have done his job and
issued Ms Thomas a ticket, if our gov't was doing
their jobs they would commend him for doing his job.

Not very smart Madison County traffic Deputy, stating in the local news paper that your new Sheriff has imposed a quota system for traffic citations. I can hear a local attorney now, Mr. Deputy how many tickets had you written on the day in question? What time did your tour of duty end? I suggest to you ladies and gentlemen of the jury my client was not speeding he/she is only guilty of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and filling Mr. Deputies daily quota. It only takes reasonable doubt. I obviously am not an attorney, but any real attorney worth their salt could establish reasonable doubt using an argument similar to mine.

Honestly I'm more concerned with keeping the citizens of the county happy than the new sheriff. Is that not what he was elected to do, serve the county? If having quotas met every week is his biggest accomplishment then we are in for a rough ride! As far as lowering the speed goes, since all these deputies have quotas to meet just send them that direction and problem solved, at least for a few weeks until were in debt from law suits!

Before everyone goes crazy with the comment by county traffic deputy let me say one thing. There is no way any Cop in this state would admit to a quota much less mention it in the news paper. Quotas are illegal and the discovery of one could bankrupt a municipality. It looks like someone is trying to get the sheriff in trouble or start some BS. As I understand it, there are only a few traffic officers and I doubt any one of them would be foolish enough to write such a thing.

I do not believe that there should be a quota for issuing violation tickets. Each and every one of the speeders should be stopped and ticketed as a message that violations are not tolerated. There will still be gaps in coverage that will allow self-appointed speed limit gurus to drive at whatever reckless speed they wish. Until the county puts up speed cameras....

I would like to know why the grass and weeds in the median on 72 between Hull and Colbert grows 5 feet high before it is ever cut.... This is a big problem for people trying to cross over and has probably been the cause of a few accidents. I travel 72 to and from work, and I get a little nervous sometimes wondering if I am going to be in a wreck because I can not see over the grass. Who do I complain to about this annoying problem?

You wanna fuss about them being out there trying to save your life or your familys life. I know my Dad was in a wreck last week and was hit head on by a drunk driver at 5:30 A.M.The guy wasn't drinking at that time but had got so drunk the night before and thought he was ok to drive.My Dad just got out of the hospital today after having a steel rod put in his leg because it broke it so bad and a bunch of stitches in his hands and all over and staples all over his body.
The next time you want to speed think about how would you feel if you got a phone call telling you one of your family members was in a wreck and you needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible.We left here going to the hospital not knowing? Not knowing if he was dead missing body parts or ok? He was bad but alive.He was in the hospital almost a week.We took him home today and he can't walk now because someone thought they could get drunk the night before and drive.
O.h. yeah and this drunk driver was only 20 years old so who ever bought it for him better hide because they will go to jail too.
So when I see a cop DOING THEIR JOBS and stopping a speeder,DUI,Driving without a license,or no insurance you can bet I'll salute him.
They are out there keeping us safe all of us wether you want them to or not THEY ARE PROTECTING YOU.

You are wrong, Lowe did not let you do whatever you wanted. He did a great job, it is unfortunate that he lost, however who knows what the future will bring. I appreciate the job that all law enforcement do each day. I am sorry about your father, hope his recovery goes well! I am not bashing the current administration, I just don't agree with your comment about Lowe! Recount was necessary for such a close election, I think that it was just a misconception for many people as to which ticket Mr Lowe was running. It might be what you would call a "WAKE UP CALL FOR MANY VOTERS".

To LOWEMAN I sorry I shouldn't have said Lowe let people do what they wanted because I don't know first hand that was just what I heard but I met Kip before the election and he seemed pretty nice so I thought it was time for a change so I voted for him.
I think the Sheriff should be allowed to only serve 2 terms lke the President? That way you have a different change it would keep things shook up. And I don't know David Larkins but Kip must have had a good reason for letting him go? But I think now he is working for Jackson County? So he may have got fired here but he is still a cop just right up the road.

I am glad your father is recovering at home too. However, I'm sorry your "ONE" meeting w/ Kip before the election was enough info to garner your vote. Appearing nice or squeaky clean isn't always an accurate assessment.
Maybe a change was necessary but inexperience and ego minded decisions will not benefit MC. He's running a mock and doesn't care what damage he's leaving behind.

If you speed you might get a ticket. think about all the times you speed compared to how many tickets your issued. as far as Kip goes he is doing a great job you people are just in shock because your not used to a Sheriff doing his job. just sit back and get used to the idea of pro-active police work and you will see the benifits, or keep running your keyboard and go to jackson co and tell lowe all your problems and in 3 years you can go to his I lost again party and think up something else to gripe about.

He's a good guy and I've met him before.He's nice and respectful so I thought about it and said alot of people are fussing about Lowe and saying we need a change? So you got the same guy that people are saying we need a change from and a new guy so I voted for the new guy. I mean my God people give the guy a chance.

Answer this for me folk's, If there comes a time when you need assistance from the Sheriff's office are you not gonna call because Kip is the Sheriff? I don't think it will stop you and i would bet you would be nice to the man in his presence.

no I bet annoyed and anon would be the first to call.They can spout all this bad stuff about Kip not being a good Sheriff but if they were to call and Kip responded himself I bet butter wouldn't melt in their mouth? They would be telling him what a good job he is doing.

Mikey is Jackson County becoming Madison Countys dumping ground? It's a good ideal but not far enough. Maybe we should send them to Atlanta or Gainesville? Nah they would get killed out there? Then they would be on Unsolved case files on court TV.
Someone said that's where David Larkin went and that was where Clayton Lowe is at. Don't know and don't really care.

Well it looks like everyone has a comment about Sheriff Lowe and Sheriff Thomas. I will tell you that I did not vote for Lowe until Thomas decided he would run for the office of sheriff. The public needs to go to the court house and review records, look at the budget and compare these two men. I know everyone has opinions about certain areas of the sheriff's department, but be remindful of the whole picture. Today I was at the courthouse amd was shocked to hear what was going on. Deputy fired by Lowe, rehired by Thomas is now in trouble again. How can this happen? I am in the process of moving from the county and I must say, I think in the nick of time. Please everyone, before you make comments, look at the records, budget and certification of all law officers. Take control of your county.

Well I guess I don't know all that Sheriff Lowe did or didn't do? But that is the past and it should stay just that ? The past. What Kip Thomas said he was going to do before he was elected? He has done some of it and probably plans on doing the rest. I voted for Kip because I liked what he was saying and alot of people including some of the people who are against him now was saying Madison Co. needed a change so I voted for the change and You nor no one else writing their comments here will change my mind until they show hard proof that Kip is not doing his job.
Everyone wants to bring up the past so lets do it: When the Beloved Sheriff Lowe was in office when was the last sting he conducted for stores selling beer to people underage???????
Kip is doing alot of good for Madison Co.Lowe may have done alot of good too but when Lowe was in office alot of people were saying we needed a change now that we got a Sheriff that stands his ground on what he says you people don't like it. I think some of you didn't like Lowe and you don't like Kip.So let me ask you, who do you want for Sheriff? Charles Manson or the Anti-Christ???? Think about it..........

Kathy Who three you be talking about? I think my comment was written very well? My words are spelled correctly and I got my point accross. Was there something you didn't understand? You also said We three should go to Athens Tech and take remedial English? Is that an offer?????? Are you willing to pay for it???? I Graduated in 1991 and no it wasn't from Madison County. I went to a smart school. I went to Jefferson High school. We were doing stuff in 9th grade that Madison Co. was just starting in 11th grade.I know because my cousin went to Madison Co.and when she was in 11th grade she was showing me what they were doing and I had done the same thing in 9th grade.
So Me be need none of them thar english class things

OMG! Enough already people! You ALL are acting so childish, let's move on to things that really matter. If you speed and get a ticket - then, you shouldn't have been speeding! If you're going the speed limit, then GREAT, our community thanks you. Let our Sheriff and deputies do their job, if you don't like it than pretty much just get over it until the next election. Just support the "law"! Get a grip and please quit arguing like children.

David Larkins is a fine person and an honest law officer. In every instance that I have come in contact with him, he has always been a shining example of how a fine person should conduct him or herself. I have known the man for almost 30 years and had plenty of interactions with him of both personal and professional levels. When I was in the wrong, he did not use good ol' boy methods in dealing with an old friend, however much I wished he would at the time. What more could one ask of a policeman but to be firm, fair and friendly?

If you have a story to tell, you should tell a fact instead of a one line blurb with no substance. That is like me saying "that big bald deputy is the one that should be sent packing ... he is a real d bag." It may be true, but how would anyone know unless they had seen the way he comports himself in the line of duty? Perhaps your story was a load of unprintable claptrap? Sometimes one's freedom of speech is limited by the freedom of the press to not print drivel.
