Drivers aren’t obeying the 45 mph speed limit on Hull’s main thoroughfare, the city’s mayor said.
“We have legally named Hwy. 72 “The Hwy. 72 Autobahn,” mayor Paul Elkins said, “because of the excessive speed that is displayed by too many motorists.”
That’s partly due an absence of speed limit signs, which were removed by the state DOT when the highway was widened to four lanes earlier this decade.
The city has requested those 45 mph speed limit signs be returned.
“Now, I’m not going to sit here and tell you that I expect people to do 45 mph, because that ain’t going to happen,” Elkins said. “But if we can slow them down a little bit … because somebody is going to get hurt out there.”
Elkins commended the Madison County Sheriff’s Office for slowing speeders on Glenn Carrie Road, a connector between Hwy. 72 and Hwy. 29.
Several have been ticketed, he said, reducing the average speed on that road substantially.
“They have done a superb job over there … The speed limit has probably dropped 20 mph,” Elkins said.
The speed limit on a 4 lane hwy should be 55. Forcing people to slam on brakes, slow suddenly actually causes cars to bunch up and accidents to happen. I'm all for 25-35mph on Glen Carrie. The state highway should be 55, as evidenced by the mayor's inference that no one has been hurt.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If people aren't getting hurt, don't change it. It's clearly working as it is.
Again, per the mayor's inference, there are not currently people being hurt. And you can check with GSP for stats on accidents on Hwy. 72 near Hull caused by excessive speed. I'm not aware of even one. Occasionally there is a fender bender due to the light at the rail crossing due to human error.
The traffic light seems to do a pretty good job of reducing speed when it turns red, as people have to stop. It doesn't make sense to reduce speed from 55, to 35, on a 4 lane highway where there are no businesses. The only business in Hull with an entrance / exit on 72 is the Golden Pantry. That's it. One. Hull is only a city in someone's imagination, there's no "town" unlike Colbert and Comer where there are towns and it makes sense to reduce speed due to the high number of entrances / exits and businesses.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If there are not a high number of accidents being caused by excessive speed on 72 in Hull, it only proves that it is safer to allow traffic to flow than it is to force cars to bunch together with meaningless reduction in speed. Bunching traffic together causes accidents, not speed.
Sounds like the mayor just wants another revenue stream.
this person did not pay attention to the red light, how
do you expect this person to pay attention to a speed
limit sign. They would of been speeding i'm sure just as they
did not stop for a red light. I cross over hwy 72 every morning
and every afternoon and have never had any problems with
speeders. Yes there is a post office as well as residents on
this road but why drop the limit to 45? I think 55 is
a good speed limit. Its not the number of the speed limit,
it is the driver.
All you have accomplished with the sign is that before the sign you would only have a rear collision when the speeding motorist ignored the red light. With the lower speed limit and signs, now you will have rear collisions when the light is red, AND when the light is green. Moronic.
Let them go ahead and set up a speed trap then if they get pulled from Hwy.72 in Hull it will serve them right. If people know they can't be stopped by Madison Co. through Hull they will fly through there
Second, you state, "We work aggressively to target those traveling at speeds of 10 mph or more."
Do you really expect us to drive slower than 10 mph? 10 mph seems pretty slow to me. I don't believe the writer of the above nonsense is an actual deputy. I certainly hope he isn't!
Second, why do you post anonymously? We have this thing in th USA. It's called freedom of speech without fear of persecution.
If you want to bash someone at least let them know who you are!
If he's so great & he's so sure of what he's spouting then why not post his name?
What has to happen for a recall? If someone has a correct answer or a link, please share this info. It's unlikely to happen but still interested in the answer.
Step 1Write an affidavit and submit it to either the Town Clerk or the State Election's Commission. Ten people must sign the affidavit for most town recall elections, but the number varies by state.
Step 2Draft a petition for a recall election with the help of the other people who signed the affidavit. Once the town or state reviews the affidavit, you must then present a formal petition signed by a large percentage of registered voters. Most small towns require around 20 percent of registered voters to sign but for a statewide petition it could be closer to 50 percent.
Step 3Form small committees to go out and ask for these signatures. If you're working for a state-level recall election, it would help to buy advertising time on television or the radio. You need to make members of the public aware of the reasons why they should force the official out of office, whether it's for violation of oath, incompetence, corruption or something else.
Step 4Send letters to newspaper editors. Some papers may have expressed disapproval of the public figure in their opinion pages and might be willing to print your letter. You can also try to get time on an early-morning news show to reach the television audience.
Step 5Submit the petition to the town clerk or State Elections Commission once you have the required signatures. The town selectman or the Election Commission will then schedule the recall election if all prerequisites are met
I guess we all have our own points of view.
I do hate to read that you have a quota of tickets to write.
being issued a citation, if so, that deputy would have
a target on his back and would be gone in flash! The
ticket I got for speeeding will be disputed and you
better believe the "wife" not getting a ticket will be
my bread and butter, why should I have to pay if she
does not? The deputy should have done his job and
issued Ms Thomas a ticket, if our gov't was doing
their jobs they would commend him for doing his job.
Again, if you want to keep your job do as he did, let
her go dare not write a ticket to a family member, they
are allowed to break the law.
PS the 10-7, 10-42 is going a little overboard!
What's all this crap about Deputies not being traffic cops? Hello if the deputies don't stop you then who will? You people want to cry and gripe because you liked Lowe and he would let you do what you wanted now you know your days are numbered because Kip won't pet you?
You wanna fuss about them being out there trying to save your life or your familys life. I know my Dad was in a wreck last week and was hit head on by a drunk driver at 5:30 A.M.The guy wasn't drinking at that time but had got so drunk the night before and thought he was ok to drive. My Dad just got out of the hospital today after having a steel rod put in his leg because it broke it so bad and a bunch of stitches in his hands and all over and staples all over his body.
The next time you want to speed think about how would you feel if you got a phone call telling you one of your family members was in a wreck and you needed to get to the hospital as soon as possible. We left here going to the hospital not knowing? Not knowing if he was dead missing body parts or ok? He was bad but alive. He was in the hospital almost a week.We took him home today and he can't walk now because someone thought they could get drunk the night before and drive.
O.h. yeah and this drunk driver was only 20 years old so who ever bought it for him better hide because they will go to jail too.
So when I see a cop DOING THEIR JOBS and stopping a speeder,DUI,Driving without a license,or no insurance you can bet I'll salute him.
They are out there keeping us safe all of us wether you want them to or not THEY ARE PROTECTING YOU.
I think the Sheriff should be allowed to only serve 2 terms lke the President? That way you have a different change it would keep things shook up. And I don't know David Larkins but Kip must have had a good reason for letting him go? But I think now he is working for Jackson County? So he may have got fired here but he is still a cop just right up the road.
Maybe a change was necessary but inexperience and ego minded decisions will not benefit MC. He's running a mock and doesn't care what damage he's leaving behind.
You people need to face it Kip won and Clayton Lowe lost? Enough said move on.And it wasn't just me that voted for Kip.Alot of you said Madison County needed a change WELL YOU GOT IT now quit crying. It's like they say "Be careful what you wish for because you just might get it then what you going to do" cry and whine because you don't like the changes Kip is bringing about.Madison County is better now than it was 2 years ago.
Looks like you kept Major Burns first new release on being pro-active. Anybody could be pro-active if all you focus on is speeders! Duh, NO BRAINER!
O.k.let me ask you a question? If there ain't but 2 people in the election and you don't know one of them and know the other but everyone is fussing about needing a change in that office? Because the one that is in that office ain't doing his job. Wouldn't you lean towards electing the one you didn't know? I mean it's common sense if you have it use it. The one you didn't know may not be no better but it is a change. Every Goverment office needs a change once in a while to keep the person who is in it from getting settled and stale.
CONSIDER THIS...Do some homework and find out what the candidates are all about. Don't base your vote on someone else's opinion. Just because your buddy says jump, doesn't mean you do it! Change might be needed sometimes but at least be able to make an informed choice of your own. NOW...I mean it's common sense if you have it use it."
These sane people that don't like Kip now and saying they wanted Lowe to win are probably the same people that said we needed a change from Lowe.
You can't have it both ways folks
In your second line you got a typo? It should read ya'll won't be missed not yall want be missed
They're mot even wise enough to make up a good name.I got a few they could use: Madison County Coward
Running scared
Don't like The Police
If you scared say you scared?
Someone said that's where David Larkin went and that was where Clayton Lowe is at. Don't know and don't really care.
Everyone wants to bring up the past so lets do it: When the Beloved Sheriff Lowe was in office when was the last sting he conducted for stores selling beer to people underage???????
Kip is doing alot of good for Madison Co.Lowe may have done alot of good too but when Lowe was in office alot of people were saying we needed a change now that we got a Sheriff that stands his ground on what he says you people don't like it. I think some of you didn't like Lowe and you don't like Kip.So let me ask you, who do you want for Sheriff? Charles Manson or the Anti-Christ???? Think about it..........
So Me be need none of them thar english class things
Also what was this law doing that you were behind on Hwy.72 that you had to write his tag number down???
If you have a story to tell, you should tell a fact instead of a one line blurb with no substance. That is like me saying "that big bald deputy is the one that should be sent packing ... he is a real d bag." It may be true, but how would anyone know unless they had seen the way he comports himself in the line of duty? Perhaps your story was a load of unprintable claptrap? Sometimes one's freedom of speech is limited by the freedom of the press to not print drivel.
