His helping our school was on a year-to-year, month-to-month, day-to-day basis. Because of his generosity, our school has been able to lower the student to adult ratio so that our children get small group instruction to help them to learn and to excel. What Mr. Polk has been doing is improving our community and our county by showing interest in our children.
What Mr. Polk may not have known is that he improved my life as a teacher at Comer Elementary. When teachers are supported by community leaders, we are encouraged and excited to do our best to help our students and therefore, our community. Mr. and Mrs. Gholston have been our superheroes not only in the area of giving donations, but also in giving of their time and prayers and their visits! Whatever we asked the Gholstons to attend, our King and Queen were there! Our end-of-the-year picnics were very special because of their presence. Veterans Day was probably Mr. Gholston’s favorite day at our school. He was the first speaker, the oldest speaker, the longest speaker and the best speaker with many stories to share.
The people of Comer Elementary of today and of the past don’t really know how to say thank you to the Gholstons. They mean so much to us. All we can say is thank you, we love you, and we will miss you, Mr. Gholston. We have great memories of their visits, a painting by Mr. Gholston that hangs in our school, and a lasting example of what we all should strive to be. Polk and Eula Gholston will always be a part of Comer Elementary School!
Sincerely,
Cynthia Pittman Cox
