Danielsville gets check for stolen funds

The city of Danielsville received an insurance check last week for $248,103 — minus a $1,000 deductible — to cover funds allegedly stolen by former city clerk Michelle Dills, and for related expenses of the investigation. Dills was a bonded employee.

Mayor Glenn Cross said the city received the check right after Dills was indicted by the grand jury April 22 for allegedly taking $196,000 from city coffers between 2003-2008.

The council agreed to discuss how the funds should be used to repay debts at its next work session, which was scheduled for Tuesday, May 26, at 7 p.m. (The council voted to move the meeting from Monday, May 25 to Tuesday since Monday is Memorial Day.)

Cross said the funds have been deposited into the city’s general fund in the meantime.

The council also agreed to change its work sessions to “work session/financial reports” meetings so that the group can discuss financial matters more in-depth.
