Colbert man faces drug, obstruction charges

Michael Loy Martin, 35, of 2182 Lem Edwards Road, was charged with two counts of disorderly conduct, two counts of possession, manufacture, distribution etc. (hydrocodone and alprazalam), driving while license suspended, obstruction of an officer and possession of tools for the commission of a crime.

According to the incident report, Deputy Jason Ring went to the store on information from investigators that Martin was carrying drugs in his black Honda CR-V. After identifying him, Ring attempted to place handcuffs on Martin, who bolted and ran. Martin crossed Hwy. 72 on foot with deputy Ring in pursuit. Ring tried to deploy his taser gun to force Martin to stop but missed and Martin then grabbed the taser and stunned Deputy Ring twice with it on his arms.

After a struggle, Ring threw the taser away from them and got Martin in a chokehold to subdue him. Two other deputies arrived as back up and took control of Martin.

A bag with suspected methamphetamine was found in his back pocket. Inside a shaving kit in Martin’s vehicle deputies found an unmarked prescription bottle and a set of scales.

In another arrest, a Comer woman was charged with DUI and other charges after Comer police officer C.D. Moody stopped her on Hwy. 72 at Hwy. 22 for no insurance coverage.

Sonya Gail Cooper, 44, of 911 Clairmont Avenue, was charged with DUI, no insurance, driving while license suspended or revoked, open container, obstruction of an officer, drugs to be kept in original container, possession of a drug-related object, giving false information or false name, probation violation (deposit account fraud x 9) and the following “bondsman off bond” charges: driving while license suspended or revoked, possession, manufacture, distribution VGCSA possession of cocaine, possession of tools for the commission of a crime, giving false information or false name and DUI/drugs.

According to the Comer Police report, Cooper first told Moody her name was “Harriett Davenport,” and that she did not have her license on her. Her vehicle registration number identified her as Sonya Cooper. When Moody attempted to handcuff her for no insurance and giving false information, Cooper began to walk away and after several warnings, Moody stunned her with his taser gun. Cooper fell to the ground and was taken into custody after she was checked by EMS.

Several illegal drugs were substances were allegedly found in her vehicle, and Moody noted that he found a glass pipe in the back seat of the patrol car after delivering her to the Madison County Jail.

•Richard Alan Lowery, 43, 165 Coile Road, Danielsville, possession of tools for the commission of a crime and possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.

•Steven Chance Massey, 20, 165 Ed Coile Road, Hull, probation violation (original possession of methamphetamine).
