A Maysville teen was arrested in the early hours of Friday morning after leading deputies on a high-speed chase into Athens-Clarke County.
Christy Renee Gibson, 17, 1068 Old Miller Road, Maysville, was charged with failure to obey a traffic control device, driving with a learners permit (without license), improper turn or U-turn, reckless driving, speeding, failure to drive within a single lane, improper passing and two counts of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
According to the incident report, Deputy Mark Jerome was on patrol on Hwy. 106 South when he spotted a Dodge Caravan weaving over the road.
As he approached the vehicle, the van made a U-turn, pulling into the parking lot of Neese Grocery. When Jerome activated his lights, the van pulled back into the southbound lane of Hwy. 106 and took off, reaching speeds of up to 109 mph in the 55 mph zone. The driver ran the red light at Norwood Road, traveled south and then ran the red light at Hwy. 29 and Hwy. 106, crossing over onto Glenn Carrie Road.
Gibson reportedly passed several vehicles in a no passing zone. Deputy David Kidd was waiting at the red light at Hwy. 72 and Glenn Carrie Road and had stopped traffic. The van ran that red light and crossed onto Old Elberton Road with both deputies in pursuit, crossing into Clarke County. The van then ran a stop sign at Voyles Road, before the driver lost control of the van and it flipped, with the van landing on the driver’s side. As the deputies approached the van, they noted that Gibson was standing up outside the vehicle, smiling at them. She first said that she was 16, but Jerome later confirmed her age as 17. Gibson told the deputies she was on intensive juvenile probation and had run away from home about 2 a.m. after slipping off her ankle monitor several days before.
She complained of soreness on her back, neck and leg from the accident and was transported by EMS to Athens Regional Hospital.

If it had been me when the cops walked up I would have said DID YOU SEE THAT I missed my turn or did you see that guy run down to the woods? I would have said I was his hostage being held against my will? I mean you going to jail so have some fun with it.
I know I always did when I knew I was going to jail.About 17 or 18 years ago when I got stopped for DUI and the cop said I was under arrest for DUI I ask could I drive the police car to the jail,he said no and I said good because I had been drinking.. Stupid I know but it made him laugh
O.k. everybody go read Elaine's comment #6 This is called being nice some of you could take lessons from her?
This time it was because of a "tip" that someone was driving on a learner's permit. What will it be next time, to apprehend a robber that stole candy from a baby? Let's hope someone doesn't get killed.
For some reason I thought you weren't supposed to release that much info on a minor.. not sure about that but i thought most papers don't release the name when a minor is involved. She just got exactly what she probably wanted. LOTS of attention and her name in the paper. Obviously she doesn't care about jail. Bratty teen: 1, Barney Fife: 0.
Also madison resident, yeah lock her up with grown ups. She could have kill somebody .
You & Madison County Resident seem to be the 2 Kip cheerleaders or I should say athletic supporters. If you & Kip can't take the heat then get out of the kitchen & quit your #%@#$%!!!
I don't care you can like whoever you want and I will like who I want. You can think what you want? You can even think the sky is pink and the world is flat? Just don't get to close to the edge??
