Christine Register will only have to drive one town over to get to her new job.
After working a three-year stint as assistant principal at Colbert Elementary, Register has moved six miles down the road to take over as principal of Comer Elementary School.
“Obviously, I’m very excited … elated,” she said. “It’s a dream come true.”
Register takes over for Bob Thomas, who served as Comer Elementary principal for two years. The Madison County Board of Education approved her hiring Monday evening.
Register is somewhat familiar with her new school “from being just down the road the last three years,” she said, adding that she’s worked with Comer assistant principal Jodi Cronic before.
Tuesday was Register’s first day on the job. She has a little over a month to prepare for the 2008-2009 school year, which starts Aug. 7. Pre-planning for teachers begin Aug. 4.
“So far so good,” she said. “It’s a little quiet right now.”
Register added that she’ll be at the school all summer “for those that would like to stop by and say hello.”
Born in Atlanta, Register graduated from the University of Georgia. She’s lived in Athens since 1977.
Register brings 22 years of experience in education to the job. She taught for 19 years at Barnett Shoals Elementary before making the transition to administration three years ago.
“I’m just very excited,” Register said. “It’s an honor to be the principal of Comer Elementary.”
OTHER PERSONNEL MOVES
The BOE also made two personnel moves Monday night, releasing Jared Robinson from his contract at Madison County Middle School (effective for the 2008-2009 school year) and hiring Tom West as a system transportation director (effective July 15).
