A Watkinsville man is suspected of trying to shoplift beer and pretzels from Ingles Grocery in Hull last week.

A store employee told Deputy Jeff Strickland that he observed a man pushing a shopping cart with four 36-packs of Bud Light beer and a pack of Snyder’s pretzels toward the exit of the store without paying for them. Store manager Jerry Drake followed the suspect out the door where he confronted him. The man left the buggy, ran across the parking lot with a store employee in pursuit and drove away in a white 1995 Chevrolet C-1500 truck with tag number 513 AGH.

Deputy Strickland was unable to locate the suspect, who has been identified, at the time of the report. The truck he was driving was reported stolen from Oconee County on June 24 and a store video of the incident was placed into evidence.

In another incident, a woman on Wrigley Court in Hull reported that someone broke into her home while she was gone on the afternoon of June 23. Approximately $6,650 in jewelry, electronics, household goods, firearms and clothing were reportedly taken during the break in.

Other incidents on file at the sheriff’s office this week included:

•A woman on Norwood Road reported that she received a call from a woman she knows stating she was “coming to her house to kick her a….” The woman did come to her home and had an altercation with the victim. The victim stated that the offender and those with her were known to her and to witnesses.

•A burglary was reported on Della Slayton Road.

•Theft by taking was reported on Dove Circle.

•A public drunk was reported on North Fourth Street in Colbert.

•A burglary was reported on Hwy. 72 East in Carlton.

•Criminal trespass was reported on Hannah Heights in Hull.

•Theft by taking was reported on Fernwood Drive in Hull.

•An abandoned vehicle was reported on Hwy. 98 West at Frank Bird Road.

•Criminal trespass was reported on Spratlin Mill Drive.

•A burglary was reported on Wrigley Court in Hull.

•A burglary was reported on Adams Road in Hull.

•Aggressive driving was reported on Hwy. 29 South in Hull.

•Terroristic threats and acts were reported on Hwy. 29 South.

•A lost cell phone was reported on Hwy. 29.

•VGCSA was reported on General Daniel Avenue.

•Simple battery was reported on Irvin Kirk Road.

•Theft by taking was reported on Garnett Ward Road.

•Battery was reported on Grady Drive in Hull.
•An abandoned vehicle was reported on Poca Road.

•A stolen vehicle was reportedly recovered on Irvin Kirk Road.

•Simple battery was reported on Carrie Lane in Hull.

•FVA violation of domestic orders was reported on Bedford Drive in Hull.

•Simple assault was reported on Hwy. 29 South in Hull.

•Theft by shoplifting was reported on South Main Street in Ila.

•A burglary was reported on Hwy. 106 South near Hull.

•Simple battery was reported on Blacks Creek Church Road.

Wait a minute this guy stole a Truck right? And you are trying to tell me stealing beer and pretzels are more important? It's like you can take my truck but don't mess with my beer and pretzels? I was shocked after I read this story that the stolen truck didn't make no part of the Headline? I guess they figure since he didn't steal the truck in Madison County it don't matter it's not news worthy.

I noticed most of everything was "reported", does that mean actual arrest were made? I personally was a victim to the "public drunk REPORT on North Fourth Street". Does that mean they actually found the person, or just a "report" was made? I need to know these things!!!!!!!

For your information - the drunk driver was in their vehicle coming head-on toward my vehicle - I had to go off the road to keep from being hit HEAD-ON!!!!! I was simply asking a question about an incident being "reported", if that meant the same thing as being arrested. Why do you have to be so darn mean about it. I was a victim and called the police myself along with the other person who had to go off the road because of the drunk person. The ways you be talkins....its soundses likes u been doins some drinkins! GET SOME GRAMMAR CLASSES!!!!!

$6,650 was the total vaule of all the items taken. Jewelry was the first thing listed, but not the only thing taken. Here's what the article said...

Well Mr.or Ms.anon the value of the jewelry may have been more than the value of the electronics? And electronics have Serial numbers and can be traced but jewelry don't you can sell jewelry anywhere but electronics people ask more questions? Another thing does it really matter what order the stuff was listed as long as it all got listed? And have you ever thought that may be the way the homeowner listed it so that's the way the police wrote the report and the newspaper printed it like the police report read that way nobody could fuss and say why didn't they list the guns first?

I don't think Sheriff Lowe pretended to be a choir boy. I believe he is a decent person and I think he did a great job! Otherwise he wouldn't have stayed in office for 12 years. I think if you non-supporters will read the journal and take note of whats happening with the Sheriff's dept budget, you will reconsider your negative comments toward Mr. Lowe. I believe for 12 years he remained within his budget and according to the paper this week there will be a workshop for the Sheriff dept budget. This should tell you something. It is open to the public and I hope some of you attend this and see what is really going on in our county and with our tax dollars. A sign not being delivered to your house and listening to people giving untrue statements to win a vote is certainly not the way to decide who should be a leader in our community. I drove to Sheriff Lowe's house and personally ask for a sign. If you remember he was still working his Sheriff's duties during election time unlike Mr. Thomas taking a leave from Oconee County to deliver signs.

I would like to thank Sheriff Thomas for doing a good job. I appreciate all of your effort. I didn't vote for you, but i have been impressed by you, and you have my vote on the next election. I think most of these comments are from people you have let go for whatever reason. And reading the blogs---i can understand why---David, to be so disrespectful makes me question your upbringing. If you are planning on running for Sheriff, i assure you i will not vote for you!!I voted for Clayton Lowe (even though i was disapointed in him, i asked for a sign to put in my yard, and he wouldn't give me one, someone said it was because i didn't contribute to his campaign) i still voted for him. I couldn't contribute because i am on a fixed income(retired)but assure you i still vote. I have met Sheriff Thomas and have been very impressed with him. I might add, i am not ignorant to lawenforcement, i have three sons in the field. So i have been around the block a time or two. Thank you Sheriff Thomas, and keep up the good work!

Citizens of Madison County ask the good sheriff why in the past few months we have had a investigator quit for so called personal reasons, he has suggested to a deputy with an spotless record and stellar job performance to find another job elsewhere because of his choice of friends. Change always happens when a new Sheriff takes office. It happened when the previous one did as well, but usually they make changes for the better. All I can say is Ask questions of your elected officials, watch what kind of job they are doing for you and your county and then make your own decision.

I believe that Sheriff Thomas knows what he is doing. Given time he will right the ship. Sheriff Lowe was a good man,with the right intentions, but who let the people he supervised get out of control and ruin his chances for re-election. Sheriff Thomas has made some of the same mistakes by appointing friends into positions that they were not in any way qualified to hold. But, such is the learning curve for a new Sheriff. Given time I believe he will learn from mistakes and work to make the department better. Bad mouthing from former Deputies unable to conform with Policy and Procedure changes should be expected... and ignored. The blame game has been in existence in the department for a long, long time. Good excuses for poor performance. Give the Sheriff his term and if after that you are not satisfied. Let your vote speak for your dis-satifaction

Thank you Mr. Newman, i've been reading all of these blogs and i think you make the best sense of any of them. I voted for Clayton and have alot of respect for the man, I also have met the new sheriff, and have respect for him too. I think we should all give him a chance and stop listening to the complainers. I read all of these blogs during the election, more than 1/2 of them were not true, the ones about Lowe and the ones about Thomas. Both are good respectable men, i for one would like to see what happens in the future and stop worrying with the past.

We all wanted to clean house this past election and we got a new chairman and a new probate judge and a new sheriff but we missed the clerk of court some how ? I really hope that the next election that we can take care of the clerk of court too! She has been in there too long and thinks she owns that office ! Just let me tell you about it, I went in the other day to take care of some business and the lady I wanted to talk to was there but Mrs. Strickland seen me come in and just jumped all in my business and was SO RUDE that I just left without getting my business taken care off !!!! With people like that in office we need to show them who is really the BOSS and remove that kind of ATTITUDE from our county offices !!!! I really feel sorry for the employees in that office to have to work in an environment like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well anonymous all I can say for now is limit how often you go to that office? Make sure you have to go in before you do until the next election? I have seen this in a number of offices at the court house? Most of the ladies are nice and a joy to go see but it seems like there is always one mean,rude,nasty lady that acts like it's your fault the world is in such bad shape? I usually get nasty right back and I had one lady treating me real nasty so I started treating her nasty right back and she said something about the way I was acting and she didn't deserve to be treated that way? I said I was just giving it back because that's how she was treating me? She said she was sorry and since then it don't matter what mood she's in when I walk in that office she puts a smile on and is nice to me?

WTH- In case you didn't know I will tell you. It's not right of you to correct Anon or these other so called English majors? It's Ok if they correct you but other people are supposed to look over their mistakes and say well they must have been typing to fast because they get offended. Yes WTH I agree with you the story could be about a kid catching a big fish but they would turn it into how sorry the Sheriffs Dept.is or the kid caught the fish illegally or the kid was fishing were there was a No fishing sign? Like grammer I do be from the Mountains of TN so we have a different way of talking up thar. If alot of these people went to my home town the people there would think they talk funny. At least when I asked to speak to Sheriff Lowe he always took my call or returned it shortly therafter. I called Mr. Thomas and was told he would return my call within the hour. It has been 2 months and he has not called yet. Talking about a"Mindless Robot".......... Of course he is a puppet on a string controlled by DAD and FATHER-INLAW. I can't wait to the next election, I hope someone will come out of the woodworks and show the county what a real sheriff is all about.
