Man faces numerous charges after chase
A Commerce man faces numerous charges, including DUI/drugs, after he allegedly drove off without paying for $30 worth of gas at Neese Grocery on Hwy. 106 South.
Dennis Caleb Blanton, 20, 7614 Hwy. 98 West, was also charged two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of leaving the scene of an accident, two counts of obstruction of officers, two counts of interference with government property, two counts of criminal trespass, four counts of failure to stop for a stop sign, two counts of limitations on overtaking and passing on the left, and one count each of driving on the wrong side of the road, fleeing or attempting to elude police officers, reckless driving, possession of marijuana, gas theft, driving without a license, failure to yield entering roadway and failure to drive within a single lane.
According to the incident report, deputy Michael Moore was dispatched to be on the look-out for Blanton’s vehicle, a 2000 beige Nissan Maxima with its mirrors broken off, which was reported to be traveling north on Hwy. 106.
Moore met the vehicle on Hwy. 106, turned around and attempted to stop it. The vehicle pulled over, but the driver took off as Moore was exiting his cruiser.
Blanton led deputies on a chase and was stopped a short time later.
In another arrest, Heriberto Mercado, 18, 9574 Hwy. 72 West, Hull, was arrested for disorderly conduct and obstruction of an officer. According to the incident report, Deputy Klint Segars and deputy Jeff Vaughn responded to Tranquility Mobile Home Park on Hwy. 72 regarding a man “running around disturbing the neighborhood – hitting cars with his fist and out of control.”
Deputies found the man standing at the entrance of the mobile home park and when he saw them he reportedly “took a defensive stance and began swinging his arms as if he were boxing.”
Deputy Segars ordered the man to the ground but he did not comply and was tased. Mercado reportedly fell to the ground and was taken to jail.

Do a search for "Hankins" (or whomever) in the PDF document and you will get the arraignment info. For Mr. Hankins it is:
"14.) 10MR00058 STATE OF GEORGIA v. BRANDON MICHAEL HANKINS
Count 1.) THEFT BY TAKING - FELONY, a Felony Offense Date: 11/08/2008
Bondsman: BRANDON MICHAEL HANKINS Bond Amt: $15,000.00"
Not sure about the other charges in the article above (VGCSA, etc), or if this arraignment is for other charges before or after the charges listed here. But with the info. at the Madison Clerk Of Court website, all citizens should remain informed. Just because someone is caught and arrested, don't assume they are behind bars yet. It can take longer than most people think, as the point is made here, i.e. long after the charges / news articles are current. Occasionally the press will follow up on arraignments and trials, but not usually. Most papers print the police blotter and that's it unless the case is high profile. Citizens are often surprised to find that one facing serious criminal charges, even felonies, may not go to trial for months or years and remain out on the street for all that time. Basically the rule for victims and victims' advocates is don't assume anything and stay informed.
