Dear Editor:

Following recent local elections, and with the prospect of the changes in store for the board of commissioners (BOC), questions arise as to what the near future will hold for the citizens of Madison County. The support given by the BOC to the recent decision by the Industrial Development Authority (IDA) to apply for a loan/grant to fund a water pipeline from Franklin County into Madison County’s District 2 leaves one pondering the spending precedent that is being set for the next administration.

Feds expect schools to make yearly progress toward perfection by 2014

Three Madison County schools have missed Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) assessments, while more student subgroups fell short of progress marks as well this year.

Results were released Friday by the Georgia Department of Education.

Dear Editor:

(This is in response to Zach Mitcham’s July 24 opinion column: “We need sound policy, not political punching bag, on global warming.”)

Global warming arrived in reports of a dramatic temperature increase between mid-1990 and mid-2000. This rise in temperature implied that more heat was received from the sun than radiated back into space. The concept of greenhouse gas was developed to explain this phenomenon and anthropogenic (man-made) CO2 appeared to be the only atmospheric component increasing in that time frame.

Four small business operators in Madison County were arrested and charged with operating a commercial gambling establishment. In one case it was his second arrest on the same charge. These four small businesses had poker machines in their stores, and they were giving players cash prizes when they won. That is a clear violation of Georgia law. [ Full Story » ]
