It was a rough day in Atlanta for the Madison County Red Raiders, as the boys fell in the first round of the baseball state playoffs. D. Dukes flies to 2nd at state

The Red Raiders’ track team ended the season with a state placer from the Georgia Olympics last weekend at Jefferson. Derrell Dukes capped the season for Madison County earning second place in state in pole vault with a 13’6” flight. “How is your garden coming?” That is a common spring time question in the rural South. The home garden was once a major contributor to rural families’ food supply. My family always had a large one that, along with the chickens and a couple of hogs, provided us with the majority of our diet. It was not at all uncommon for a family garden in the mid 20th century to be a half-acre or more. [Full Story »] 

Comer plans referendum on Sunday sales

A Sunday alcohol sales referendum will be put on the November ballot for the city of Comer.

Comer council members agreed Monday to draw up the wording for a referendum to go on the November ballot. Council members emphasized that the decision would be on whether to extend the current beer and wine ordinance to include Sunday sales from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays. These hours would not include normal hours for church services. The referendum would not cover liquor.

The Georgia General Assembly recently voted to allow local governments to call for referendums on Sunday package alcohol sales. Comer is the first governmental body in Madison County to call for a referendum.

Madison Co. 8th, 11th graders below state average on writing tests; 5th graders show significant improvement

Madison County eighth and eleventh graders performed below the state average on writing assessment tests this year, while county elementary school fifth graders showed significant improvements over the previous year’s class.

Just over 10 percent of Madison County juniors taking the eleventh grade writing test for the first time last fall failed to pass.

The 313 Madison County eleventh graders who took the test finished 379th in the state, with 89.5 percent of first-time takers passing the writing test.
