A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for 10 a.m., April 5, for the expansion of the Madison County Jail.
A third pod has been added to the jail, bringing the facility’s bed capacity up from 64 to 96. Those on hand Tuesday will get a tour of the facility. The public is invited to attend.
Madison County voters approved approximately $3 million in sales tax funding in 2008 for a jail expansion. That project was delayed for several years as the county sheriff worked out a housing deal with a jail in a neighboring county that reduced housing-out costs for Madison County. But that deal eventually fell through. And the county began the construction process shortly after, approving a $2.65 million contract for the expansion.
Now the project is complete and inmates are set to move in to the facility.
