Opinion is generally divided in half in the county over whether Hwy. 29 traffic warrants a bypass around Danielsville, according to the State Department of Transportation.
The DOT has released data from its July 30 open house regarding the bypass of Danielsville, revealing a 50-50 split between those who approve and disapprove of the project.
“This is an overview,” DOT spokesperson Teri Pope said in an email. “No route has been eliminated or selected yet. We are continuing to work through the comments.”
Of those who left comments at the open house, 47 oppose the project regardless of which route is chosen, while 47 support it in some form. Nine others are uncommitted.
Of those 47 who favor a bypass option in some fashion, 26 support of it fully, while 21 support it with conditions.
The DOT, however, has no data over which of the four bypass options is most popular with those leaving comments.
The bypass possibilities include one route that goes west of Danielsville, another that goes east, and two that start east of town and cut back across Hwy. 29 and swing west. Each of the four bypass options spans at least 11 miles, tying back into Hwy. 29 north of Danielsville near the intersection of Hwy. 281.
An online poll conducted by The Madison County Journal last week revealed that 89 percent of those who voted favored an east option opposed to west bypass.
Those commenting to the DOT raised several questions about the project, including traffic concerns, cost feasibility, the impact on property value, the effect on homes and businesses, increased development in the area, school traffic, impacts to the environment and whether the project is actually needed.
Sixty-seven people also signed a petition requesting another open house.
Pope said the DOT would hold at least one more public meeting should there ever be a “buildable route” and funding to move forward with the project. That meeting is actually required by federal law. Any meetings so far have been public information open houses.
Pope said last week that the DOT is “years away” from any funding or decision regarding the Hwy. 29 project.

Don't need it. Don't want it. Save that money and use it to on another part of the budget for something that is actually needed and useful.
As for the "Don't need it. Don't want it." line, that is one opinion. Another could be that sure, it is needed. Traffic patterns at certain times of the day on US 29 are heavy and make commutes from the homes to where the jobs are very tiresome. In addition, almost 28% of the people who cared enough to attend the meeting and respond to the survey DO want the bypass no matter what route is chosen. That seems to be a pretty strong showing for those who would favor a upgrade, given the fact that most people who take time to attend meetings such as this do take the time to attend because they are in the opposition.
72% don't want it.
I'd say 72 beats 28...we don't want it, don't need it, can't afford it anyway. Stop wasting time and money talking about something we don't need and the vast majority doesn't want.
Just say NO to this bypass nonsense. If we stand together we can stop it.
It is like what was said above more people show up to oppose than in favor of. It is the American way if you get someone opposed riled up they have to show up to put a foot down if your in favor you don't feel as compelled to show up and fight for it.
Besides, the majority at the meeting were opposed. Maybe we should have another meeting so all the "bypass supporters" can have another chance to get their supporters out and then do another head count and base the bypass on that count. I've a feeling the vast majority at the meeting will again be against the bypass because, well, the vast majority of Madison County citizens are against the bypass.
A multi-million dollar bypass for little bitty Danieslville? Hahahah...that's funny! Nope, spend those millions on something we need, like fixing the roads we already have!
Danielsville gets one little bitty piece of a shopping center and now you think that, whoopee, we have businesses now! For that, you want to keep making people who live east of Dinkyville wait on you to putt putt through town and turn left into the Chicken Exxpress?
Give me a break.
Whatever, it doesn't have to be a bypass, but instead of saying "nope don't need it don't want it," stop being so obtuse and talk about the elephant in the room. I lived there all my life and it is a pain in the butt to drive on the same roads with you people. Passing lanes to get around you once we are through town maybe? Four lane the whole street even through town? There is room for four lanes to get around the courthouse.
I don't care if you "want" it or not... something is needed. Come up with some alternate solutions instead of hiding your head in the sand.
