Property tax bills to arrive soon

Property tax bills will arrive in mailboxes soon.

County tax levying boards have already approved their tax rates. And BOC chairman Anthony Dove said Monday that the state has accepted the county’s 2009 digest.

“The bills should be out in the next week or so,” he told commissioners.

Dove allowed that the arrival of tax bills in the mail is a “good thing and a bad thing,” pointing out that two tax bills in one year is hard on people, but adding that at least the 2009 bills are being mailed in 2009. Tax bills have been perennially late in recent years.

While local tax rates remained steady this year, homeowners can expect an increase of about $240 on their bills since the state government eliminated the Homeowner’s Tax Relief Grant this past year. Local governments had no say in that decision.

Yes, I will think about the governor. State employees forced to take furlough days, no raise in pay, 10% increase in health insurance, and he takes away our homestead exemption. I may have to apply for food stamps!

Tax bill is higher. Commissioners cannot pass the buck to the Governor. Just because Sonny Perdue is easily the most inept, incompetent, and corrupt Governor in the history of Georgia, it is no excuse for the commissioners to be the same. They should have reduced the budget so tax bills wouldn't be higher. I'll remember this tax bill come election time. For the party that has controls the Governor's office, the state legislature, AND the local commissioners!

Are you kidding? The budget was walked through AGAIN this year cutting each department by at least 5%. This was done last year too!! Read the paper, go to meetings and get informed. Know what you're talking about before you speak or type.

These tax bills cannot be laid entirely on Perdue. There are a number of questons. Why did values for conservation go up when values are frozen? Why are some people given lower values, even when they did not ask for them? Why do the calculations not add up right? Why has the qpublic web site not been updated?? Why are the minutes from the BOA meetings not posted properly in the complex or have not been updated since March?? Is this a sunshine law violation??? There are a number of questionable practices going on in the assessors office. What are they trying to hide????? Why did it take so long for the bills to come out after the new BOA took office? The old board could have done better than that. I guess it could be only one twenty minute meeting per month at double the pay. But I guess in the end nobody really cares. So they just get away with whatever they want to. So don't blame it all on Sonny. The people have to demand accountability.

MC to Anonymous : old board at times did not get bill out to following year !!!!!!

Tax bill reduction : lets review all conservation parcel tax breaks and see how many qualify. Giving tax break to someone who does not deserve it is taking tax's from all of us. Next lets publish those who owe back property taxes or start selling property unless compelling issue.
