Sales tax revenues were down in Madison County last year.
County commission chairman Anthony Dove reported Jan. 4 that special purpose local option sales tax (SPLOST) generated $1.95 million for the county government last year, compared to $2.04 million in 2008, a 4.4 percent decrease. The Local Option Sales Tax (LOST) generated $1.44 million for the county government last year, down from $1.51 million in 2008, a 5.5 percent drop.
Also Jan. 4, commissioners received a letter from former Colbert Mayor John Waggoner, who praised recreation department maintenance director Grady Autry for his work over the years at the Colbert park.
The board heard from human resources director Donna Sisk, who asked the group to reconsider its 480-hour cap on accrued sick leave. She said that under the current policy of capping the sick leave time, employees are punished for not ever missing a day.
“Right now, people who know they’re going to lose time may just call in sick to keep from losing some of that time,” said Sisk.
Dove replied that those who may abuse sick leave like that are probably not going to build up to 480 hours anyway.
The board took no action on the 480-hour cap.
In another matter Jan. 4, commissioner Stanley Thomas said he’d like to set up a meeting soon with newly elected city officials, adding that all officials in the county need to work together as tough economic conditions continue.
