Dear Editor:

In response to John Pethel’s recent letter to you, I would like to take this means of thanking him for taking the time to read my letter to the editor and respond to it.

Mr. Pethel, I’m sure you felt that the BOC needs defending and that you are the spokesman for the group. Your last paragraph caught my interest where you said, “I stand ready to discuss any part of this letter or any part of the county budget with anyone who would care to.”

I would like to be that “anyone.”

You are well aware that there are issues I have been trying for years to discuss, only to be cut off by time limit “stop lights” or commissioners refusing to answer questions.

Perhaps chairman (Anthony) Dove would allow us to use the commissioners’ meeting room for our discussion. If so, any evening after 6 p.m. would be perfect for me. Please let me know if this can be arranged. I’m looking forward to hearing from you soon.

He will never meet with you Mr. Escoe. Commissioner Pethel does not have what it takes to come out in public with you. He is too busy cleaning house at the county complex.

is hiding behind someone he won't dare meet you, he knows
too many people hate him.. I do respect you for trying.

I see no problems with this. To Mr. Escoe my question to you would be does the BOA or BOC need to ask state of Georgia to find way where can re-evaluate all conservation status parcels to see if they qualify ? A yes or no is adequate at this time but I think a meeting would be interesting. LEVEL playing field for all.

Mad. Co. Taxpayer, everytime you post, you refer to the conservation status of the citizens of this county. First of all, the conservation program is designed for qualifying individuals that meet certain requirements. If, a person(s) were to in-fact gain this conservation break, this is a legal and binding document, that is filed in the court house.
Now, I understand your feelings about certain people not deserving the tax break, but unless you can prove commercial activity, your efforts may be in vain. To look at this from a economic standpoint, do you realize how much money it would cost the citizens of this county in legal fees to undue these contracts? More than what they are receiving in tax breaks, I can guarantee you. Many of the conservation parcels that were approved under the watch of a previous previous board are going to come due in a few years and I hope our existing office personnel can visit those parcels and decide if they qualify.
As far as a level playing field, well, if anything, Pethel has the advantage because he has all of the county data at his finger tips to use at his descretion.
If I were a BOC member, I would be apalled that Mr. Pethel would speak in an open atmosphere regarding county business. Eventhough, he would make a small disclaimer, public perception is priceless and the county attorney will be glad to tell him that. The public will perceive him as a spokensman for the BOC, I would stay far far away from that, but then again, Pethel has already crossed that line.

I pay to much tax as is good person. If Conservation tax applied correctly then OK but my view is waiting the reapplication period lets taxes not be collected. My view but bet others think same thing.

Maybe someone should see how many conservation tax parcels there are less than 15 acres ? or how many family farms where have mutltiple families on with children in school where no farming going on. Level playing field is one reason last MC election new faces in BOC.

Again, you have a valid point. Unfortunately, it is not realistic. I too, pay a huge amount in property taxes; however, I am willing to wait until the renewel period of those conservation properties due to the extreme amount of money it would cost you and I to breach those individuals.
There are alot of people in the county that have many children in the school system, using police services, water, etc; that are not paying taxes. This theory applies to the conservation parcels as well as the "others". At least the land owners have some equity in our county and they do in fact pay taxes but just at a lower rate.
I think since you have such an issue with the conservation program you would be better suited to go from the top down rather than the bottom to the top. Maybe you should call your local representative or better yet your state representative and tell him to stop all of this nonsense......the law is written where it is bias to the property owners not the county. You are fighting a losing battle, sir.

Escoe embarrasses himself further. Man, it is time to move on. We have a new BOA. You had your chance, you were terrible.

By the way, the new assessor and board lowered my value to right where I TOLD YOU it should be!

Did they lower your value as a favor or because it was too high?
If they lowered your property and not other like property then they messed with uniformity. Is this blog a way for you to thank them?

No. Assessors lowered it to the correct value after looking at the same voluminous, practical evidence and private appraisal that was presented to Escoe and the gang.

Escoe loses just like I told him he would. Let's just say that based upon my own observations of his knowledge, or rather, lack of knowledge, from meetings, appeal hearings and of course, his never-ending drivel aired through the newspaper, Escoe could at best be characterized as "not the sharpest tool in the shed." A tool he most certainly is, however, just not the sharpest tool.

You see #6 you're part of the problem. You get a special deal from the new BOA and you're happy. What about everyone else who didn't get a special deal? They have to pick up the slack and pay more. That's what is wrong with our county now. It's every man or woman for himself and the hell with everybody else. Just plain rotten to the core!!!!

R U Thru,I did read #6.1.1 but that does not mean it wasn't a "special deal" just because that person said so. You are the one who is "clueless". If you only had a CLUE! As for me having a lot in common with Escoe, I don't know about that, but if the man is right he is right! And in this case he is absolutely right!

I think a grown up would have moved on by now. There is no way Escoe would be satisfied with anything anyone would say if it wasn't in his line of thinking. I've seen school kids with more maturity..

You want to be that "anyone", but by wanting it in Anthony Dove's office you'll be pulling Mr. Dove also. Meeting with Mr. Pethel just isn't good enough is it? Dang it man. We the people have seen enough of your errational behavior. We have spoken and the correct actions were taken by the BOC. Just stop your crying and move on for Heaven's sake!

If you will read the letter (or, if you CAN read the letter) you will see that he made no mention of meeting in Anthony Dove's office. He asked to meet in the commission meeting room. It is from there that the BOC rules supreme, and Mr. Pethel appears to want to speak for them on many, many things, so he should be glad to meet on "his" territory.
