New training facility planned at Madison Co. Sheriff’s Office

Madison County’s Sheriff’s Office will soon have a new training room.

The 24X60-foot facility will be constructed at the sheriff’s office off Hwy. 98 by ModSpace of Lawrenceville.

“They (ModSpace) will get it up and hook it up,” said sheriff Kip Thomas.

The Northern Judicial Circuit was recently awarded a federal grant. And Madison County, which is one of the five counties in the Northern Circuit, will get $36,000 for training facility.

Thomas said the new facility will save the county money by allowing deputies to receive classroom training in-house rather than going elsewhere.

County commissioners recently approved the project at a brief called meeting. The board recently approved the purchase of three new patrol cars for the department at approximately $25,000 each. The county received just over $11,000 in insurance money for wrecked patrol vehicles, which will be applied to the cost of the new cars. The board agreed to pay for three new patrol cars with funds left over from 2009.

Maybe you should take the 36,000.00 "YOU GOT FROM THE DISTRICT ATTORNEYS" OFFICE and buy another Tahoe, what's that five totaled out vehicles in a few days over a year? The Counties insurance company can't be very happy. You also may want to reign in some of your lead footed deputies before they kill somebody if it's not too late. People will soon tire of your do as I say not as I do attitude!

In a job that is admittedly high risk, accidents are bound to happen. These vehicles are on the road 24-7 so its amazing that there aren't more accidents! In response to your misguided comments however, a lead footed deputy didn't cause the Tahoe to wreck. A reckless citizen who didn't follow traffic laws and HIT the deputies and nearly killed them caused the Tahoe to wreck. Thankfully they are okay....So the county's insurance company will be happy that someone else will be footing the bill. Get your facts straight before posting! Kip is doing a good job with limited resources. You have to be realistic. He can't fix everything wrong in the world. I think he is a fair and ethical man who is far more concerned with Madison county than the previous sheriff. You people just need to give him a chance. Its only been a year.

well....... i would say that he has done alot that he said he was going to do. the grants don't just appear, you have to apply for them and get them awarded to you or your agency. I would assume that you are a c.l. man/woman and wouldn't know anything about this because he didn't like grants, or he didn't know how to get them. well........ skippy as you call him does and i would say that it is obvious because he has gotten three to four since he took office. THAT MEANS IT DIDN'T TAKE LOCAL TAX DOLLARS!!!!!!! get over it Kip Thomas is the sheriff and a dang good one!!! skippy, skip, kip or whatever his name is is a lot better than what we had!

Why didn't they hire a local builder instead of a builder from ATLANTA?

The county says, "Buy at home to keep it local."

But our commissioners are spending our money in ATLANTA!

It is a good thing to have a training room or classroom at the Sheriff's office no matter who the sherriff is. A safe place for community groups to meet or to train in. Hopefully the deputies will continue to receive advanced training and not just in-house training. By observation, there are not many expert instructors there at this time but hopefully that can change.
