Man gets 3 years for vehicular homicide

Bennie Shelton Roberson, 30, 270 Blueberry Hills Court, Athens, was also sentenced to one year confinement for DUI. Roberson was also fined $880. Charges of weaving over roadway and acquiring license plate with the purpose of concealing the motor vehicle ID were dismissed.

Roberson crashed an Oldsmobile Delta 88 on Aug. 13, 2006, on Smith Road in Madison County. He failed to negotiate a curve and the vehicle struck a tree. Evangelo Hancock, a passenger in the vehicle, was killed in the accident.

Other actions filed recently in the office of the clerk of Superior Court of Madison County included:

•Jerry Angel, 32, Commerce, was sentenced to three years probation and fined $185 for theft by taking. Three charges of failure to appear were dismissed.

•Nathan Eugene Sweaza, 25, Comer, was sentenced to one year probation for obstruction of officers, taillight violation and DUI. He was also sentenced to 240 hours of community service and fined $1,628. Charges of obstruction of officers and driving while license suspended or revoked were dismissed.

•Jeffrey D. Doster, 47, Hull, was sentenced to one day confinement, one year probation and 40 hours of community service and fined $280 for fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer. He was also sentenced to one year probation and fined $775 for DUI. Charges of open container violation, obstruction of officers and driving while license suspended or revoked were dismissed.
