A Danielsville man was arrested for driving under the influence recently after he allegedly nearly ran a deputy off the road.
Justin Presley Pruitt, 26, 360 Era Carey Road, was charged with one count each of DUI/alcohol and weaving over the roadway.
According to the incident report, Deputy David Kidd was traveling south on Hwy. 174 about 2:30 a.m. when he met a tan Ford Windstar van in a curve in his lane. The vehicle swerved back into its lane and continued north. Deputy Kidd turned around and followed the vehicle as it turned on to Water Oak Road, where it stopped at a mailbox.
The driver, Pruitt allegedly told Deputy Kidd that he was driving in the center of the road hoping that it would help him avoid deer. Deputy Kidd asked him why he continued on after he nearly ran him off the road and Pruitt replied that he did not know if Kidd was a Madison County deputy, or if he worked for Oconee or Barrow County.
He also reportedly said that “I know how this works, I have had a DUI before.” When asked if he’d been drinking Pruitt replied that he had had a few drinks earlier. Deputy Kidd also found a glass pipe in the passenger seat, and when asked about it Pruitt replied that it belonged to a friend and that it was “indeed used to smoke marijuana.” Pruitt said he had not smoked any marijuana and there was no marijuana found in the van, but he tested positive for alcohol and was arrested. Pruitt was then transported to Ty Cobb Memorial Hospital for an injury to his eyebrow, which he told Kidd he had gotten by falling on the ice earlier in the night.
