These must be all the people, mostly young and naturally healthy, who have yet to interface with the medical industry. Both your column and Frank Gillispie’s of Feb. 25 point out well why it is all such a mess. For those satisfied Americans, here is my story that could just as well be their story.
I became self-employed in 1982 and acquired an old-fashioned indemnity policy covering me, only, which worked reasonably well for nearly 10 years. Then, with my health essentially unchanged, the rates started skyrocketing (double digit) and I kept upping the deductible and reducing the benefits. Five years later I found myself paying $600 a month with a $10,000 deductible followed by an 80/20 co-pay for only a million dollar cap, no drug coverage and restrictions on pre-existing conditions. For a decade I had to fight a royal battle for literally each and every claim I made and I won them all. This was insane!
I tried to buy a different individual policy by applying to different insurance companies via the Internet. They were either no better, just as expensive or found the slightest reason to reject me. These inquiries, I discovered later, created an obstacle to securing coverage elsewhere because now I had a record of being turned down for insurance. I turned to an agent who managed to get me a Blue Cross & Blue Shield policy that very soon also got too expensive. He then put me on his own company’s group policy along with two people I knew in the same boat. I thought this was odd, but he said it was O.K. Eight months later BC&BS suddenly cancelled us all without warning. Apparently, this was not “kosher.” He then got me a $200 a month temporary policy with only scant catastrophic coverage that I kept renewing for three years because I simply had no other option. I became afraid to go to a doctor (still do) for fear something would appear on my medical record that would keep me from ever getting coverage again.
In 2005 my doctor of 16 years went to a concierge (VIP) practice far beyond my means. I felt abandoned and marginalized. I decided to stop the madness and simply do without the insurance and the medical world, to just let nature take its course as human beings have done since time began until the last couple of centuries. It felt peaceful to be relieved of this losing battle for health care, at least for a few years.
When I moved to Madison County recently, an agent in Athens arranged a $449 a month BC&BS policy for me, very steep during these economic times, but I began to fear the medical industry would not attend to me properly or at all if I didn’t have coverage. Nine months later the premium went to $555, a 24 percent increase even though I have made no claims. I know that as soon as I have any medical condition that will cost BC&BS money, they will immediately cancel me before I can even get to a hospital. So why am I paying so much money every month? This makes no sense; no wonder so many people drop this incredibly poor value.
I decided to keep paying and try using the medical industry again to at least get some return on my premiums. Properly, one should have a primary care physician, so I carefully researched and selected a large group practice in Athens and called to see if any of the doctors who were accepting new patients had had any experience with a particular problem I have. The receptionist called back to say (sheepishly) all the doctors in the practice agreed that none of them wanted to take me as a patient because of this problem, which makes diagnosing other problems a bit more difficult. Not only have I been rejected by insurance companies for hardly profound pre-existing conditions, now doctors are doing the same! I cannot win! This is wrong! This is immoral!
Insurance companies are evil, doctors are greedy and hospitals are sloppy and inefficient. I guess I go back to nature taking its course. At least it’s peaceful.
Sincerely,
Virginia Moss

Because they are being told they're satisfied with it over and over again by Rush Limbaugh and the good folks over at Faux News.
Eveybody is afraid of this black man president that is a communist,Islamic radical and social engineer, that was probably foreign born(no birth certificate)and that is trying to single-handedly destroy capitalism.
How foolish is that?
Ignorance is bliss,right?
Doctors' organizations and Insurance companies spend alot of advertising money trying to convince Faux News viewers that they are content and well served by the current system, and it's working. Politicians that are owned by Doctors and Insurance companies say the same thing. The people that matter the most(not us) are getting rich off the staus quo and have no desire for anything to change. Ever.
Senior Citizens on Medicare that are demanding the gov't stay out of their healthcare is a good example of believing everything you're told. Medicare is Socialized healthcare.
Will I lose my common sense too when I reach age 65? That's only 15 years away for me. How can people with a lifetime of experiences be so easily duped?
My doctors office called me last week before my appointment to remind me to come in,and to make sure I bring a current insurance card with me. Thanks for caring.
I told them that I ranked them right up there with Politicians,Bankers, and Lawyers, but if it makes them feel better, they were #4 on the list.
We have all been raised on lies.
One of the first things we learn in school is that politicians don't tell lies. Remember George Washington and the Cherry Tree incident?
Whose idea was that?
Sorry Virginia, Santa Claus was just the tip of the iceberg.
I'm Muslim and offended.
So,if I may reply..
I couldn't care less if you're offended,or that you are a Muslim.
I guess the words "Islamic Radical" offended you irregardless of the context they were used in. Just saying those words gets your blood going, doesn't it?
Too bad. Again,I couldn't care less(I'm drawing a picture of Mohammed right now).
I'm an American. I don't identify myself by my religious affliation or my ancestral background.
I suggest you do the same.
I have insurance. I would rather my tax dollars go towards healthcare for the less fortunate, rather than being spent on Warfare so that private war support companies can build fortunes at the expense of young American lives and our economy.
Be happy friend and hang in there. In just 3 more years you will actually be able to get some real health care that cannot just cancel you!
The US had a golden opportunity to create a universal health care system that works for the USA by reviewing all the existing systems like Canada, UK, France, Germany etc. WE the USA would be the last advanced nation to get universal healthcare, but the medical lobbists have done a great job scaring everyone that it's bad.
If you haven't seen "SICKO" by Michael Moore I suggest everyone watch it, quite an eye opener even if you don't like him this documentory tells quite a few stories about our health care system.
I'm currently unemployed so no insurance for me - totally unafordable. Before that my health care costs just for monthly premiums, deductibles and pharmacy costs escalated at alarming rates and nothing was done.
Until the people in this country believe that health care is a right not a privelage for the few, nothing will change. As our country struggles to recover healthcare is now a luxury item, only for the well off.
Many other republicans became democrats after their savings and jobs vanished thanks to Bush / Cheney wrecking the economy.
The times, they are a-changing!
With the exception of the very wealthy coming here for cosmetic surgeries their single payer govt. health care doesn't cover, not only do people from other countries not come to the U.S. for medical treatment, in reality the exact opposite is true: U.S. citizens travel abroad to get health care because it is UNAFFORDABLE in the U.S.
Do a simple search and you will find this to be true. So true, and so popular, and so common, that there are actually "health care travel packages" so U.S. citizens can have basic procedures (colonoscopies, mammograms, dental fillings) and complex procedures like heart surgeries done in India, South America, and Europe.
Just because you heard it on talk radio doesn't mean it's true. On the contrary, it means you are more than a little ignorant for being poor yourself, but repeating the bogus talking points of the wealthy who don't care that you can't afford health care, either. Don't be a tool.
Hey Bodawg, maybe the Brits haven't been convinced their success in life depends on the straightness of their teeth yet. How much orthodontics care is covered by your insurance? Our policy covers about 20% of the cost.
If you have ever been to Britain, you will also know that they don't drive fancy cars or live in fancy houses like we do. They are less interested in keeping up with the Jones than we are.
I personally know of someone in Madison County that traveled to Mexico to have an operation performed that she could not afford here. That's not just something I heard on the radio,it happens right here.
Well, you couldn't be more wrong, I don't need to watch TV to understand everything I already know.
Do you?
Certainly sounds like you are regurgitating the fear monger talking points that Rush and the Fox News liars spew at the request of their big business sponsors. They depend on their audience of naive Christians(who are known to believe ANYTHING)to continue hating(that's what they do best) whoever, whatever, and in whichever direction they are pointed in.
I own two businesses and close to a million dollars in rental property here in Madison County. I'm about as capitalist as you can be.
Also paid well over $50,000 in personal income taxes for 2009.
I'm the guy that will actually be paying more taxes now that this healthcare bill has passed. That's okay with me.
I'm glad none of the Republicans voted for this bill. One year from now when the fear laced lies have not developed they will look like complete fools. They gambled everything on the side of ignorance and lost.
"Fox News is the only reputable news station around". That statement right there paints a pretty complete picture of who you are. I could probably describe you to a T and easily pick you out of a crowd. LOL.
Enjoy your hate. War on, hypocrite.
