Madison County High School will have an in-house deputy next year.
The Madison County Board of Education (BOE) approved an agreement with the Madison County Sheriff’s Office March 9 for a school resource officer (SRO) after being presented with the proposal in February.
The agreement underwent minor changes after being reviewed by BOE members and the BOE’s legal counsel for the past month.
“The substance of this agreement hasn’t changed,” Madison County Schools Superintendent Mitch McGhee said.
Madison County High School has been interested for several years in an on-campus officer but the school system hasn’t had the funding for it.
But under this agreement, the sheriff’s office will cover the SRO’s salary. The Madison County School System will furnish the officer with an office.
The agreement calls for one-year terms that can be renewed by either party at the end of each year.
The officer will have to undergo training to become certified but should ready by July 1.
“It still seems like a very positive thing for us and the school system, and I believe it will be for the sheriff’s office as well,” McGhee said, before recommending that the BOE approve the agreement.
McGhee said it’s his understanding that SRO would be equipped like any other officer, which means the SRO will carry a gun.
“There are no restrictions, and I believe he’ll be a fully-outfitted deputy,” McGhee said. “
What will the "officer" do when school is not in session?
Why will she only be assigned to the high school? Shouldn't she be working all the schools? Shouldn't we put an officer in each school?
She can resolve food fights and lovers' spats in the high school, spit-ball throwers in the middle school, and assist children in proper aiming and hitting the toilet in the elementary schools.
Too much government in our lives. I understand this is part of Obama's public school indoctrination program. Ironic since Kip Thomas ran as a Republican. Guess he is Republican in name only. Certainly not conservative - politically or fiscally.
that said problem also is so call non level playing field where say popular student held to less standard than kid no so popular or whose parents are not well connected or well connected but politically non popular as maybe support charter schools.
I vote for school present employee to fill this position. If level issue of SRO being a "true police officer" lets get laws change where such teacher same protection as SRO.
My view. My view teachers already paid to much / to many benefits.
their children better the school would not need this non sense.
The fault is the parents not the teachers etc..
When you say, "...sending the bull crap home for the parents to do." Do you actually mean "... stop asking parents to take an active role in their child's education?"
The teacher's role is to do what you're complaining about. To get the children and the parents involved and to help make the child ready for adulthood. Are the "teachers from England" going to do that for a better price?
MCHS probably doen't "need' a SRO. To say, though, that it is a "wonan's job" or that a SRO babysits children is to be ignorant of the position. The SRO is an actual officer who deserves respect... just like a rational person would respect any officer of the law. (No mater how you feel about the current Sherrif)
I delayed commenting on this thread because most of the previous posts have been so asinine. I couldn't resist any longer.
Sardonic : level playing field needed : would like students to grade teachers excluding bottom 10% and top 5%. Need to be sent to outside system for calculation review. No personal comments. To say parents not involved is tactic used in 1960's and before and a teacher once told me " can drive them crazy and make them quite by noting parents not doing their job". Problem that phrase or crying wolf no longer works. Often the brightest students with better emotional/hustle skills than so call IQ skills get turned off and decide without level playing field will just do bare minimum or lowest common denominator production as why do more based on what they see as outcomes. Maybe why less boys attending college than girls in many schools.
Economic capacity to maintain present system at crisis point good person. If tax more just NOT THEIR even if you take view 100,000 grand + year not big bucks even with 2 income families not many in MC making this. Maybe all who post on this board including myself need to get out more and see what is occurring in our community.

Then select the year you want and check the dot next to "Local Boards of Education."
Then type the person's last name, and there you go. All the details about any teacher, or virtually any public employee's or contractor's pay or reimbursements.
taxes or not who know?
Although it doesn't seem to pay off in results, it is easy to see where the priorities lie.
Unfortunately, I didn't find a likely candidate that made over 100K. I even checked one teacher who had over 30 years of experience and every degree besides a doctorate (Bachelor, Master, Specialist, National Board Certification) and that teacher only made $74,848.14.
Oh, and about that head football coach who made almost 95K... it may be of some interest that the defensive coordinator made only 59 and change... and is a heck of a good teacher.
If the teachers would teach these kids they would not send this home for the parents to do they act like we have nothing else to do when we get home from work. Also for the taking an active role with my children I will have you to know I personally take a role with my children on a daily basis as the father of two and no it is not the teachers job to see that the children and parents take that role it is their job to TEACH the kids. So next time you get ready to comment get the facts while you resist commenting !!!! Things are not always as they seem look beyond the comments for the positive side!!!! Have a blessed day
Teachers send homework for kids to complete, not parents. Don't do you kids' homework. It defeats the purpose! Homework is necessary because there is not enough time in one period to impart everything a child needs to understand or the repetition needed to grasp a theory or subject. It's not "bullcrap" it's pedagogy.
The next time you comment, anonymous father of two, try to see past your own inferior intellect and rise above your station.
"Have a blessed day." *eyeroll*
You get the message your not as smart as you think !!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think that teachers make too much money. I think they, for the most part with some glaring exceptions, are underpaid especially in poorer counties like Madison.
Oh...and the comment that they are needed for the other schools...that would be a waste at the elementary schools. It would be good for the middle school to get one if this works out at the high school but all the schools don't need one. That would truly be a waste of tax payers money.
