A portion of Hwy. 98 will soon be named after the late Madison County newspaperman Jere Ayers.
Commissioner Bruce Scogin announced Monday that the Georgia General Assembly approved a resolution this year that will establish Hwy. 98 from Danielsville to Comer the “Jere Ayers Parkway.”
Ayers was owner and publisher of The Danielsville Monitor/Comer News since returning from World War II service in the U.S. Navy in 1945. He died in a 2005 traffic accident at age 91.
Commissioner Wesley Jordan asked Scogin whether addresses for citizens on Hwy. 98 E will change. He said he wasn’t sure, but that he will investigate that. County attorney Mike Pruett said that he expects residents’ mailing addresses can remain the same.
Scogin said several “Jere Ayers Parkway” signs will be placed on the road, with a dedication ceremony expected sometime in September.
