Man charged with marijuana possession in jail
An Athens man was charged recently after a small plastic bag containing marijuana was found in his cell during a random search at the Madison County Jail.
Quinton Devontay Smith, 18, 121 Sartain Drive, was charged with failure to appear and crossing state/county guard lines with weapons, intoxicants or drugs without consent.
Other incidents on file at the sheriff’s office recently included:
•Theft by taking was reported at Midway Feed and Seed on Hwy. 98 West last week. According to a video surveillance camera, a white male in a burgundy Volvo station wagon came up to the front of the store and loaded a steel wheelbarrow and several rolls of wire fence in the car about 9:15 p.m. on April 24. At approximately 9:42 p.m., the vehicle returned to the store, where the man loaded a second steel wheelbarrow and a porch swing into the car. The vehicle left both times going in an unknown direction.
•A camera ordered through mail order was reportedly missing from the box it was to be delivered in.
•A couple on Hwy. 98 East reported their teenage daughter missing.
•A jar full of change was reported missing from a bed side stand in a home on James Lane after a woman reported that her back door and another door had been pried open while she was gone.
•Violation of a family violence order was reported by a grandparent at Ila Elementary School.
•A man on Sixth Street reported that his debit card was used without his permission.
•A woman on Ingram Road reported that someone has taken money from several areas in her home over the last few months. She told officers that she suspects that a woman who worked for her as a maid took the money, although when confronted, the woman denied it. The thefts included $150 in change, $700 in cash and approximately 50 silver dollars.
•A woman visiting the Madison County Library reported that her purse was taken. The woman, who went into the library with her children, told officers she was certain that she had the purse with her in the library.
•A man on Alberta Drive told an officer that he suspects his identity has been stolen after he ran his credit history and discovered a $326 balance erroneously owed a collection agency.
•Criminal damage to property was reported at a rental mobile home on Jones Chapel Shiloh Road.
•A man on Holly Creek Church told an officer that he believes his mother has been taking mail out of his mailbox. He said he picked up three packages from her which she said she had to sign for and that he is missing other pieces of mail, which he believes she has taken and that he wishes to press charges. He requested the report so he can obtain a warrant hearing through magistrate court.
•A woman in Diamond Hill Mobile Home Park on Hwy. 29 South reported that someone had come into her unsecured home between 4 and 5 a.m. that morning while she was sleeping and tried to smother her with the covers and a pillow. She could not provide any description of the suspect to the officer. She later noticed that her purse, which was on an end table near where she was sleeping, was missing.
•A Madison County Industrial Authority shop building was reportedly broken into last week with several items taken.
•A fence was reportedly damaged on Moons Grove Church Road.
•Shoplifting was reported at Ingles in Hull after a woman reportedly tried to steal two 40-ounce bottles of beer by placing them in her purse and trying to leave the store without paying for them. When confronted by a store manager, the woman left the beer, along with her purse. The manager said she did not wish to press charges but did request that the woman be barred from the store.
•Harassing phone calls were reported at a home on David’s Home Church Road. A woman reported that her daughter, who attends Madison County Middle School, received a strange voice mail on her cell phone late the night before that said in an automated-sounding voice, “you should have answered your phone, strike one,” then strike two “you should have answered the phone,” and the last one around 11 p.m. reportedly said “strike three, you should answer your phone, I’m coming to get you.” The woman said two of her daughter’s friends reportedly received similar messages, which the caller ID said came from her daughter’s phone. The woman said her daughter’s phone was in her (the mother’s) possession when the calls allegedly took place.
•A trailer was reporedly stolen from the roadside on Brookview Drive. An older red pickup with a white male driver approximately 35 years old was reportedly seen in the area.
•A man on Hwy. 29 South reported that a male subject from a telemarketing type company called his house twice in two days, saying that if the homeowner sent $450 in a money order to a listed address, he would receive $250,000 in return. On the day of the report, the man said the caller had requested $4,000. He stated that that he was not going to send any money, he just wanted to report the scam.
•A man on Hudson Rivers Church Road reported that the rear window of his vehicle had been broken out while it was parked overnight. The officers could not locate a rock or any object that could have been used to break the window.
•Five separate incidents of attempted or threatened suicide were reported.
•Harassing phone calls were reported on Frank Bird Road.
•Simple battery was reported on Jones Chapel Shiloh Road when a woman told officers that her husband grabbed her hair. The man said he did not touch her, but that she was standing in the front yard yelling for him to get away from her. She was advised of the TPO and warrant process.
•Stalking was reported on Sunset Drive when a man came to the sheriff’s office to report that a man he knows has been following him around and driving through his yard for a week. He said the suspect’s ex-girlfriend has moved in with him and he believes the man wants to do him harm. He stated that the suspect had followed him that day, until he pulled into the sheriff’s office.
•Entering an auto was reported on Ed Coile Road when a man stated that someone broke the passenger side window of his car after he left it parked when it ran out of gas. A bottle of prescription pills and an Apple iphone were reportedly stolen.
•Burglary was reported on Moon’s Grove Church Road.

steal from us we won't send you to jail. That is why our
prices keep going up, low - life shop-lifters!
The cops can't even stop drugs(pot) from getting into the jail. That's laughable.
It's time to stop this foolishness and legalize pot. The only people benefiting from it's prohibition is Lawyers and the rest of our For Profit Judicial system.
It's just plain ignorance at it's best.
