Ila to consider sale of beer and wine

The Ila City Council will consider an ordinance next month that will allow the sale of beer and wine in the city.

The public hearing is set for Monday, June 7, at 6:30 p.m. just prior to the council’s regular business meeting at 7 p.m.

Business owner John Davis appeared before the council at the May council meeting to request such an ordinance.

Davis is currently renovating the old Ila sewing plant into a grocery store and gas station and pointed out that such a measure would generate more sales tax dollars for the city. After discussion, the council agreed that it would like to hear input from the citizens before making such a decision.

In other business, the council voted to accept a bid from Cheek Brothers Contractors in the amount of $141,950 to construct a new well house for the city’s new well.

The council amended the 2010 water revenue budget to cover $6,000 closing costs for the city’s GEFA loan for water line improvements.

The council agreed to flush the water lines on Saturay, June 12.

The council also discussed, but took no action on, the city’s 100th birthday celebration. A date for the event will be announced later, officials said.

Ila has already gone downhill when they first built that convenience store. Now with the other gas pumps and store being built, Ila has really lost all charm. What a shame. What used to be a quaint little area is gone. No alcohol, please.

I, too, am disappointed in the look of the renovated sewing plant. I had hoped it would be in keeping with the buildings across the street. Instead, it is a rude affront to Ila's history. Too, too bad. As for beer/wine, it makes no difference regarding the community; whoever wants alcohol can get it easily enough. alcohol does cause terrible social problems around here. I wish it just didn't exist.

Yes E.J. You are right but all the city council see is more MONEY. They think this will make Ila grow BUT Ila don't need to grow in this way? Ila has the reputation of being a small country town where you can raise a family when they bring beer and wine into the city all that innocents will be lost FOREVER? Leave the beer in Danielsville and keep Ila just the way it is.

Well when they first built that convenience store they tried to get it passed to be able to sell beer there but the store was to close to the church and this "NEW" store ain't that much farther away so I don't know and if it is to close I don't think the city can just go back and change the ordinance to get "TAX DOLLARS"
Years ago they sold beer in Pokey I say if people want beer and don't want to drive to Athens just go to Danielsville there is 5 stores that I know of that sell beer there?

Oh yeah! More tax dollars-right. Just more money in Mr. Davis' pocket. Ila is looking tacky enough-don't bring alcohol here!

anon-They say they want to build Ila up? Ila don't even have a red light? Yet that is but if they allow this then when the next man that wants to open a beer store within the city limits of Ila HOW can they tell him NO? If they try he can sue the city.

Umm...what's wrong with selling Beer in Ila?
I thought that Beer is legal everywhere in this country.

Shouldn't we be more concerned about cigarettes?

Cigarettes?

Each year, a staggering 440,000 people die in the US from tobacco use. Nearly 1 of every 5 deaths is related to smoking. Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined.

But hey, it's just cigarettes,right?

Ben Had- I got one for you to research. Most domestic disputes are the result of alcohol. HOW many times have you heard of people smoking cigarettes in them causing the people to get into fights? OK now how many times have you heard of alcohol causing people to fight? AND BESIDES THE BIBLE SAYS IT'S WRONG TO DRINK. While we are at it why don't we put a strip club in Danielsville or a Crack house in Ila?

What does the Bible say about smoking cigarettes,Red? Do tell.

And, what makes you think I care if someone opens a Strip Club in Danielsville? How would that affect me? The ones in Athens certainly don't,and they're just down the road from us.

I wish we could all just grow up a little bit.

Here's a first. I agree with Ben Had... on the cigarettes, not the alcohol. Tobacco is the revenge of the Native Americans, a real scourge on our society.

Even though it does not specifically forbid alcohol usage in the Bible, a wise person is cautioned not to imbibe in excess. Unfortunatley, too many people are not wise when it comes to drinking.

Also, regarding the cigarettes, alcohol, domestic dispute angle, couldn't it be supposed that cigarettes are the true cause of so many domestic incidents? I hazard to guess that most of those trashy people were smoking before and after they hit their husband or wife.
