Kids in back of pickup lead to charges

Damond Ladean Hewell, 29, 271 Amberly Drive, was charged with driving while license withdrawn and two counts of seat belt violation.
After initiating a traffic stop, the officer found that Hewell’s license was also suspended.

Other incidents on file at the sheriff’s office recently included:

•Someone reportedly damaged a fence in two places on Old Wildcat Bridge Road.

•A woman came to the sheriff’s office recently to report that her ex-husband’s brother’s wife has been using her name and identification for the past several months and has gotten pulled over by the Georgia State Patrol and Commerce Police Department for traffic violations. Later, when the woman herself was pulled over, the officer found that she had two “failure to appear” warrants, of which she knew nothing about. She was advised to take the report to the respective agencies for clarification.

•A man on Jones Mathews Road reported that his truck was stolen from his yard. While en route to the scene, an officer received a call that a vehicle (later confirmed to be the truck in question) had been found in the ditch on D Highland Road.

•Theft by taking was reported on Belhaven Lane after a woman reported that her father-in-law had stolen her little brother’s medication. Some of the pills were later recovered at the father-in-law’s home, according to the woman, but some were missing. The warrant process was explained to the woman.

•Officers were summoned to a home on Woodale Street to assist EMS with a combative male. A woman at the scene stated that her husband was “very intoxicated” and acting strange and combative. He reportedly told her that he saw ghosts in the yard. She did not think he had taken any other drugs.

•A man was reportedly found on Faye Carey Road with gunshot wounds to a toe and the right upper arm. He was transported by Madison County EMS for treatment.

•Someone reportedly stole approximately 90 cement blocks from a building site on Hwy. 29 North.

•Someone on Garnett Ward Road reported the theft of a dirt bike, which is described as a Kawasaki 400 spray-painted black (with green paint showing through) and a broken throttle cable, which is tied around the handlebars.

•Harassing phone calls were reported on Eugene Hardman Road when a woman said her ex-boyfriend had been calling and text messaging her wanting to see their 4-year old son, whom she said was asleep. She said she saw him ride by her residence after the first phone call and that this is an ongoing problem.

•A Phillips DVD player and a converter box were reportedly taken from a home on New Hope Church Road.

•A man on South Fifth Street in Colbert said that a blue folder containing personal documents and two Workmen’s Compensation checks had been stolen from his porch.

•A man on Macedonia Church Road reported that someone stole two Optima muzzle-loader firearms from the closet of his laundry room.

•Two rakes and a five-gallon gas can full of gas were reportedly stolen from the back of a pickup truck on Norwood Road.

•Four incidents of financial transaction card fraud were reported by a woman who said her bankcard was used fraudulently in two other states (Arizona and Nevada) in a short period of time.

•A man on Faye Carey Road reported that several guns have been stolen from his home and that he believes his stepson took them.

•A man reported that someone broke out the back glass of his car while he shopped in the Dollar General Store in Ila.

•A man in a Hwy. 106 South mobile home park said a person known to him ran down from another lot and punctured his tire. The man said he would take a warrant out against the offender.

•A Murray push mower was reportedly stolen from a residence on Foote McClellan Road.

•A deputy was dispatched last week to Hwy. 29 South in Potts Mobile Home Park in reference to a two-vehicle accident on private property. Once there, the officer discovered that there was no accident, but that a green Ford Mustang was stuck on a crosstie in the driveway. Two woman, one intoxicated, were found at the site. There were conflicting stories on who was driving the vehicle, but both were unlicensed so a wrecker was dispatched to pick up the vehicle and the intoxicated woman, Donna Darlene Bates, 48, Hwy. 78 (Walton Inn) Room 208, Monroe, was taken into custody on a probation violation from Greene County.

•An abandoned vehicle was towed from Hwy. 106 South at Willis Glenn Road.

•A woman reported that someone took her purse while she was at Watson Mill State Park that contained her cell phone, credit cards, passport, ID and $600 cash. Later in the night, someone allegedly texted her son using her cell phone and told her that her ID would be in the ladies room at Burger King on Hwy. 29 and Hwy. 72. She then called Athens-Clarke County police and went to the location, where she found the items. Nothing else has been found.

•A woman on Hwy. 172 reported fraud through the purchase of a Rosetta Stone computer program on CraigsList.

•Road rage was reported on Spratlin Mill Road at Hwy. 29 South when a woman said that a white Ford SUV tried to run her off the road while trying to pass her on Spratlin Mill Road. Then, while stopped at the stop sign at Hwy. 29 South, the passenger of the SUV allegedly got out and confronted her. A male passenger in her car got out and was reportedly assaulted by a white male passenger in the SUV. A lookout was placed for the SUV.

•A man was reportedly robbed after he got out of his girlfriend’s vehicle during an argument on Pittman Mathews Road. According to the report, he was walking along Pittman Matthews Road when a champagne color Chevrolet Trailblazer pulled up with three males and female driver and asked if he needed a ride. He said yes and at that time the three males allegedly got out of the vehicle and started hitting and kicking him. The deputy noted that he had a bloody lip, a torn shirt and was covered with dirt. He refused EMS.

•A man reported that his bankcard had been used fraudulently after he left his wallet at Diamond Hill Grocery. When he went to retrieve his wallet, he found that his bankcard was missing.
