The county school system forged ahead at its first board of education meeting of the new school year Aug. 10, working to get past its recent troubles by spotlighting teachers and students in the system for some of their recent accomplishments.
Interim superintendent Allen McCannon recognized the 2010 teachers and support persons of the year, including district winners Tanya Reese, a teacher from Comer Elementary, and Yvette Crumley, a parapro from Danielsville Elementary.
Other teachers of the year for the district include: Rhonda Crowe (Danielsville Elementary), Maggie Cowne (Colbert Elementary), Mandy Wommack (Hull-Sanford Elementary), Sandy Hillsman (Ila Elementary), Donna Hill (Madison County Middle School) and David Harrison (Madison County High School.
Other support persons of the year were: Sandy Ryder (Colbert Elementary), Kathy Wynn (Comer Elementary), Chasity Elrod (Hull-Sanford Elementary), Shirley Whitlock (Ila Elementary), Suzanne Beckham (MCMS) and Angie Pass (MCHS.
McCannon also recognized students with perfect fifth grade writing scores: Timothy Bates, Marion Chavez, Jake May, Sarah May and Emily Rose Thornton, all from Colbert Elementary; Matthew Brantley and Noah Dobbs, from Danielsville Elementary; Raven Paul from Hull-Sanford Elementary and Samantha Watson from Ila Elementary.
Board of education members were recognized with certificates for successfully completing board member training activities sponsored by the Georgia School Boards Association.
