War between the states

Madison County’s all-stars will get used to being called another name — “Georgia.”

Because from now on, it’s state vs. state.

By virtue of their recent state championship, the local senior league all-stars will move on to regional play against other state champions as they seek a trip to the Senior League World Series.

Manager Bryan Wilkes said this group of 15-and-16-year-olds continues to gain fans.

“It’s amazing how enjoyable it’s been and how enjoyable people are to be around now that you’re continuing to win and the support that we’ve gotten on it,” said Wilkes, the day after his team clinched the state title with a 7-4 win over the Western (Macon) Senior League all-stars

Madison County was scheduled to embark on the 521-mile trip to Viera, Fla., the site of this year’s senior league regionals, this morning (Thursday).

Pool play starts Friday against Tennessee.

“We are definitely looking forward to it,” Wilkes said of the trip.
