Nicholson man arrested on DUI, battery charges
A Nicholson man was arrested recently after he reportedly struck a woman and her son at a residence on Cherokee Road and then left, driving intoxicated.
Richard J. Hardesty, 31, 521 Ivy Creek Drive, Nicholson, was charged with DUI, cruelty to children in the first degree and second degree, endangering a child while DUI and two counts of battery FVA.
According to the incident report, a woman reported that Hardesty grabbed her son by the throat and threw him against a sofa and covered his mouth. The officer noted that there were several scratches and bruising around the neck area on his right cheek. The woman said he then grabbed her and struck her face causing her left eye to swell. He then left. She called 911 and a BOLO (be on the lookout) was placed on the red Ford Station Wagon. He was stopped, with a small female child in the passenger seat. The officer noted that he had a strong smell of alcohol on his person. The child was turned over to his father, who came to the scene, and he was taken to jail.
In another arrest, a father and son were arrested last week after an officer spotted five Walmart shopping carts in the back of their truck at Athens Auto Wrecking.
Timothy Bernard Patmon, 42, and Timothy Bernard Patman Jr., both of 113 N. Bluff Place, Danielsville, were each charged with one count of theft by receiving stolen property.
According to the incident report, officer Steve Kimbel was at the location investigating another case when he spotted the carts in the bed of the truck. Kimbel noted that he had read in newspaper reports about carts being stolen from various store parking lots and sold for scrap metal. The men told him they had permission from the Walmart on Lexington Road to take the carts. They later changed their story and said that a cousin had gotten permission and picked up the carts that morning. Walmart was contacted by Athens-Clarke PD and they were told Walmart did not give permission for the carts to be taken, and that they wished to prosecute. The cousin then arrived and said he had picked up the carts from a neighborhood across from Walmart where they had been left by residents for several months.
The Patmans were allowed to unload additional scrap metal that they had and were then placed under arrest.
