Man charged with illegal dumping
A man was arrested recently for illegal dumping after a deputy discovered him burning copper wiring with some black coating in a barrel.
Joseph William Adams II, 371 Timber Ridge Lane, Colbert, was charged with dumping waste under 500 lbs. or 100 cubic feet in volume and possession and manufacture of marijuana.
According to the incident report, deputy Joshua Smith observed a large cloud of black smoke coming from property on Timber Ridge Lane. Smith observed a man who appeared to be digging with a long-handled item into a 50-gallon drum, which was used as a burn barrel.
Smith wrote that the contents in the barrel appeared to be copper wiring, with some black coating on it. He said the man who burned the material said he was burning “some trash from where my house burned down.”
Smith advised Adams to extinguish the fire. He then contacted code enforcement officer Jack Huff. While investigators looked for additional copper wiring, one plastic flower pot with approximately 10 green, leafy plants growing, which Smith believed to be marijuana.
Other incidents investigated by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office this past week include:
•A clerk at a Hwy. 98 gas station reported that someone in a red four-door pickup pulling a trailer with several rolls of hay drove off without paying for $87.87 in gas.
•A Kenmore window air conditioner was reportedly taken from a property on Jones Mathews Road.
•A Pebblebrook Lane woman reported that a $50 bill was taken from her pocketbook.
•A Roy Woods Road man reported littering on his road and found receipts among the trash. The case was turned over to the code enforcement office for investigation.
•A 14-foot long trailer was reported stolen from a Sailors Road address.
•A mower was reported stolen from a Seagraves Mill Road locale.
•Disorderly conduct was reported on Virginia Lane. According to the incident report, a man said his brother was threatening his mother and his other brother. He said his brother threatened to “back slap” his 74-year-old mother. The complainant was informed about the temporary protective order (TPO) process.
•Detectives responded to a woman threatening suicide. The woman was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center.
•A car fire was reported at Hwy. 72 near McCarty Dodd Road.
•A pair of camouflage coveralls was reported missing on Thomas Road.
•Deputies responded to a domestic incident on Strickland Circle. According to the incident report, a woman allegedly slapped her son’s girlfriend in the face after his girlfriend allegedly struck a 3-year-old on the mouth and told him to quit yelling at the breakfast table. The woman said she wanted to report his son’s girlfriend to the Department of Family and Children’s Service and the son’s girlfriend said she wanted the mother arrested for striking her. The mother, son and girlfriend live in the same house. The officer said the child did not have any marks on his face.
•Criminal damage to property was reported on Fox Trail.
•A phone was reported stolen on Camp Halinan Road.
•A woman on Davis Street said her ex-husband has been sending obscene and vulgar text messages. The complainant said she would see a judge to get a TPO against the offender.
•A woman on Pebblebrook Lane reported that her three sons saw two men, one white and one black, on their back deck. A deputy investigated the scene and reported hearing footsteps in the woods in front of him. He then saw two subjects wearing dark clothing running away. He chased them. Then one of the sons yelled “He’s got a gun!” At the same time, one of the sons running next to the officer ran alongside the deputy with a hand gun in his right hand. The officer quit chasing the men and asked the sons to return to the residence. Other units arrived and the deputies searched the woods but found no one.
•A vehicle fire was reported on Helican Springs Road.
•Someone knocked holes in the walls of a vacant building on Helican Springs Road in an attempt to steal copper wiring. Trash and electronics were also illegally dumped in the yard of the vacant residence.
•A deputy reported that a man he suspected as having a suspended driver’s license turned rapidly onto a driveway on Hudson Rivers Church Road and then fled on foot after the deputy spotted him. The deputy chased the man for 200 to 300 yards before he lost sight of him. The man, Edward P. Whitehead, “PeeWee,” is wanted for felony probation violation. The deputy said he has several possible locations where Whitehead may be hiding out.
•A woman visited the sheriff’s office to report a fraudulent U.S. postal money order for $950 from her brother, Edward Paul Whitehead Jr. The woman tried to deposit the money into her account at Regions Bank but found out the money order was counterfeit.
•A vehicle spun its tires and flung rocks which broke the side glass window of the Carlton Grocery Store on Hwy. 72.
•A coil was stolen from a heat pump on Swamp Guinea Road.
•A battery was stolen from a bus at the Broad River Outpost off Hwy. 281.
•An air conditioning unit was reported stolen from Carl Tolbert Trail.
•A woman reported that her right rear bumper was damaged while she shopped in Ingles.
•A person on Stone Ridge Drive reported stalking by a person he knows. He took a picture of the person in his yard.
•A domestic dispute was reported on Hwy. 29 North.
•A go-cart was reported missing on Doris Lane.
•A woman reported that she and her ex-boyfriend have children together and they are involved in a custody dispute. She said he confronted her at the recreation department and called her a “b…..,” saying “this is the last time you’ll be coming here and you won’t have the kids after next week.”
•Mailbox damage was reported on Colbert-Danielsville Road.
•A pregnant woman on Stone Ridge Drive reported that she had been assaulted by a man she lives with. The victim said she and the man argued over something spilled in the kitchen. The victim left the residence and went to her friends’ house. The offender went to that residence and demanded the woman to come back. According to the victim, the offender grabbed her by the hair on her head and dragged her off the front porch area. The victim, who is three months pregnant, scraped her right knee on the porch as the offender dragged her. An arrest warrant for “battery against a female who is pregnant” will be filed against the offender.
•A deputy put down a deer that had been struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 106 at Old Ila Road.
•An East Jones Chapel resident reported that a neighbor’s dog jumped on her vehicle and caused multiple scratches.
•A man was bitten on the face and upper lip area by a dog named “Rebel” on Pine Street. According to the incident report, the victim asked the dog’s owner what the dog’s name was. The victim then kneeled down inside the circumference of the dog’s runner chain and called the dog by name. The dog went up to the man and bit him on the face. The man became irate and walked around the neighborhood yelling that he wanted to kill the dog. The case was forwarded to animal control.
•School resource officer Mark Jerome investigated a fight on a school bus between two males, one of whom allegedly threw a condom in the face of the other.
•A woman on Booger Hill Road reported that her son threatened to burn her house down and that he had kicked her leg.
•A Wolf Creek Trail man said his estranged wife opened up a credit card account in his name and ran up $7,300 in charges.
•A man on Stone Stewart Road said someone stole two five-gallon gas cans and a hundred-foot drop cord from his barn.
•An officer investigated a report of a garage door left open and a damaged race car engine on Madalyn Court.
•A woman reported that a deer ran through the drive thru at Quick Pick on Hwy. 72 and crashed through the garage door window. An employee at the neighboring motorcycle shop said the deer jumped out of the glass in the back garage door and ran across Foote McClellan Road.
•A woman on Parham Town Road repoted that a man rolled over on her in bed and she asked him to move. He then started to cuss at her. She got up and went outside to smoke. The offender then came outside with her. She said he then started to choke her because she would not give him her cell phone. The two were separated and the victim was advised of the eviction and warrant process.
