I have seen two dead deer on the roadsides this week. That is not uncommon these days. When deer and cars collide, it does not go well for either.
Fifty years ago there were no deer in North Georgia. A combination of loss of habitat, and the need of rural Georgians to supplement their diets with hunting and fishing had wiped out the deer population. (The massive poverty in the south as a result of “reconstruction” was still in effect.) Only a small herd were left in the Coastal Islands of Georgia. Otherwise, the state was void of the tasty woods dwellers.
With the loss of their primary food, North Georgia also lost its two top predators, the big cats, (Mountain Lions or Cougars in the north, and Panthers in the south) and the grey wolves.
Around 1960, the state game and fish people decided to restock the deer population in North Georgia. As the cotton fields were planted in pines, and many farm families found work in town, habitats suitable for deer started to return.
A 20-foot high fence was built at the zoon in Athens covering about five acres. A small herd of deer were captured from Blackbeard Island and kept in the fence over the winter to allow them to adjust to the North Georgia climate, then released into state parks or national forest in the area. This practice continued for several years.
The game and fish people were so pleased with the results that they added wild turkey to their efforts, again with quite a bit of success.
By 1990, the local deer herds were well established. By 2000 they had become a problem. There were far too many of them! Encounters between deer and cars became common. Farmers were experiencing damage to their crops, especially soy beans which had become popular n the area.
You see, when they re-established the deer population, the neglected to re-establish their predators. The big cats and wolves did not return. That left only one major predator to control the runaway deer population — us rednecks.
Now every fall when deer hunting season opens, we here objections from tree huggers and such about cruelty to animals. Constantly, they complain about rednecks in the woods with high powered rifles shooting at anything that moves. Well, the deer population has to be controlled. If not, then the damage to wrecked cars, and the damage to our food crops will continue to grow. Deer will exhaust natural food supplies and start to die from starvation.
Deer hunters help prevent these problems while stocking their freezers with high quality protein and lowering their food bills. At the same time they are feeding their families without depending on tax dollars.
So to all you gun control protesters and tree huggers, leave the hunters alone. They are doing you a big favor by protecting the highways, food crops and green lands from overpopulation of deer. Instead of griping and interfering, you should be thankful for their efforts.

If they do not heed my "griping and interfering," they may just find themselves on the wrong end of that firearm.
IF you don't like hunting or guns THEN DON'T GO nobody is asking you to go. Find some other hobby?
There seem to be way more than "a few idiots" out there; the trouble is that it only takes one idiot to cause devastating consequences. That's one too many. Therefore, the idea of refresher courses is a good idea, but I would want to see it done every year. It won't help much with the irresponsible (and drunk) idiots, but perhaps it will do so overall.
Those of #1 Anonymous's persuasion should not object to a county ordinance against discharging a firearm within a set distance, not only of a house or other structure, but of any property line. This does not limit hunting in any way. As evidenced by the astonishing display at the commission meeting addressing this issue, folks in Madison County must be extremely paranoid about not having the ability to have and use their firearms indiscriminantly. What in the world are they so afraid of?
$800 rifle
$4500 4 wheeler
$1200 trailer
$500 camo-clothes and gear
$500 hunting club
=$7500
If we are concerned about safety on the roads, why not have open Deer season until the problem is eliminated?
I think a long deer season is appropriate since we got rid of the red wolf and mountain lion, although the coyotes are doing their part by taking the fawns on a regular basis. Not a nice thought, but necessary. I hope those of you who would irradicate the coyote as well, are prepared to dodge more deer on the road.
Don't confuse deer hunters with deer shooters.
AND you said something about hunting and fishing being for men? That is a load of CRAP. The reason hunting is geared towards men is most WOMEN won't get up that early and leave home for the woods without fixing their hair and making sure their makeup is perfect. Also I know alot of WOMEN who hunt MY WIFE EVEN HUNTS. SO NOW WHAT? If you don't like to hunt then don't go but SHUT UP and let those of us who do like it enjoy it.
be such a better place. To bad they do not have an idiot or redneck season. Since shooting both is illegal maybe forced birth control would be the solution.
The only people who should be allowed to use any type of motorized vehicle in the woods are the disabled. Anyone else...please, you're just a pansy. Stay home before you get hurt or worse, hurt someone else.
they issue pretty hefty fines for the issues you brought up.
The dead deer on the road are from the stupid deer running out in the road and getting hit by a car.Its not deer parts that hunters did not want.
Yes there are too damn many. They're in my back yard everyday. I've had to put up electric wire 8 feet high with strands 1 feet apart to even have a chance at growing anything in a garden. Ive come to the conclusion that a few bullets will cost me a lot less that the electric bill from now on. Blam Blam Bambie.
US Men could complain and fuss about you WOMEN liking to shop and spend money? MEN LIKE TO HUNT WOMEN LIKE TO SHOP. If WOMEN stop shopping and spending money, MEN may stop hunting?
regulations. Poachers are the ones that people
are upset with and its already illegal, so punish them and not the real true sportsmen.
Trespassing is also illegal and true sportsmen don't trespass they have permission or are in a hunt club.
Georgia sportsmen generate allot of cash flow for Georgia's economy . Plus they generate tax revenue for the State.
So before we get up in arms about something stop ,think ,use common sense and then decide.
It is so wrong to blame the many, for the wrongs of a few !
