Madison County property owners have until Monday to pay their 2010 tax bills.

The property tax deadline is set for 5 p.m., Dec. 20.

Anyone failing to pay by the deadline will face a one percent penalty for each month overdue. After three months, a 10 percent penalty will be assessed.

As of Dec. 13, roughly $5 million out of $17 million in local property taxes had been collected, but tax commissioner Louise Watson said many mortgage companies wait until right before the deadline to make payments from escrow accounts.

Why are we paying them ? So they can put reindeer prints down the hall at the courthouse !

No anon your paying more for those who have the farm or conservation tax break. County needs to say no more and investigate. Remember when we all pushed to get back taxes paid and Ms. Watson (think her name)noted doubted would really do much but when did took in a good good bit of money. Time to look at this conservation thingie adn also stop reindeer foot prints in public areas unless paid with non tax payor funds

This is all the more reason to go to a strict SALES TAX and do away with property taxes this way EVERYBODY pays ! You buy something you pay and all the low lifes pay too when they buy something it is the FAIREST TAX there is !

That or either pay for the tax assessor clerks to go on your property and take pictures they think are "pretty" and hang them on their walls in the office, just go in there and look you may see your own property!!

Yes, and just think your tax money is be wasted to pay these people. Look back to the Halloween decorations that the courthouse had up in all the offices and they all got paid for it ! And like those Zumba classes and Biggest Loser that our taxes paid these people to participate in ! WASTE, WASTE, WASTE !!!!

Zumba Classes? Biggest Looser? Didn't know about that! I do get incredibly annoyed at the so-called decorations in offices throughout the govenment complex all year long, not to mention all the personal knick-knacks and wall hangings. No private sector business office would allow such nonsense. It looks like an elementary school. It hardly inspires confidence and respect.

Anon .. I am amused at your pot stirring comments .. No tax payers money went toward zumba classes or our biggest loser contest .. And I think I would know since I am a county employee... So next time you feel the need to fuel these blogs or pass on false information how bout standing behind your comment by leaving your name.

How about y'all spending more time working and less time decorating? Seriously, it's a COURTHOUSE and a place for the government business. Show a little dignity and just basic common sense respect. Place looks like romper room. If y'all have all that time on your hands to decorate it like a kindergarten, maybe we could do with a few less folks mooching off the taxpayers' nickel? And by the way, wasted time IS wasted taxpayer dollars.

Please tell me what incentive the mortgage companies have to pay taxes earlier? Maybe when we get our homestead exemption back the mortgage companies and other taxpayers will be able to pay them earlier.

Why do our taxes not go for clearing snow and ice off our roads not just the highway.

My road has been a sheet of ice and still is. It is a good thing they have not had school because the kids would not be safe on the buses. I do not care how well you drive or how long you have been driving, there is no control when you are on a sheet of ice.
