(An open letter to the Madison County commissioners.)

The condition of Waggoner’s Grove Church Road is horrible!

Last year, I approached the BOC many times asking that you pave Waggoner’s Grove Church Road. I was concerned with driver’s safety, bus safety, and the damage to my vehicle. I presented facts and numbers, keeping my focus and not letting anger dictate my words. Never was I contacted by any member of the BOC, to check up on, or even discuss the problem.

I have always made the request for the road to be paved because of the severe deterioration of the road. It has been scraped so many times that the only dirt left is like fine powder. Any gravel that is put on the road only becomes a hazard because there is so little of it, which gives drivers no traction at all.

The road is too narrow for two cars to safely pass one another. I believe that if our road was paved, many of these situations would no longer be a problem.

Obviously, the snow and ice have really done a lot of damage to our road. I was literally trapped at my home until Saturday and this morning, there was still ice on the road. When I called the road department (on Monday), they told me that crews were on the way … I’m still waiting.

My children will not have bus service to/from school for two days — so far — I was told they are waiting for the road to dry out.

Last year, the road crews put gravel down after our repeated complaints, I will remind you that the following day they scraped it all into the ditch.

I would like to see this problem resolved, and be able to safely drive on Waggoner’s Grove Church Road.

The gravel goes down for traction, so why do they always then scrape it off? Would someone please explain this?! Seems like they should first scrap the surface flat and then put down gravel.

E.J.- You are right they should scrape first then put the gravel down BUT Madison Co. is the only county where I have lived where they do things backwards? The dirt road that I used to live on if they came and scraped the road and put down gravel it would come a hard rain the next day. I figured the county must not listen to Ken Cooks 5 day weather forecast? OR they do and that's why they pick those days to scrape the dirt roads that way they can say they did their job and scrapes the road then put gravel down(just to be washed off the next day leaving the Rd. in worse shape than it was before) We the people of Madison Co. need some people with sense in this office.

I don't think even heavy rain would wash away gravel except maybe on steep slopes; therefore, the weather wouldn't matter.

Have Bruce Road petition person to wave a community petition for you. Then ask same person to get petition to review all conservation parcel tax break parcels and that way county can pay for up grades it needs to do in areas where this conservation tax break is draining monies from the county ( not saying that is issue in your area but Ms. Ward why not look on this road and see how many parcels are in this tax break as may be interesting )

Good post Gina and MC taxpayor good thought also. My vote is for Gina to research this tax break thing on that road as if people not deserving it I vote she sends editor another letter concerning this tax break area which may be taking funds away from maintaining roads and all.

Ms. Gina Ward like that post. E.J. got a question you should ask and write another letter abut this and taxpayor good idea about tax break thing also for you to follow up on and put that in your letter too. I go step further and see if any BOA who did the first or second were close friends of any on that road of yours. This is how our MC citizens can help. May not nothing but never know.

Seems like a lot of advice for others here. I would say the same to MC view and MC taxpayer as those commenters offer similar advice in a similar style.

To 'these' folks, I say: Why don't you take your own advice and get active with petitions of your own? Start with that conservation tax thing always being harped on.

BECAUSE E.J. petitions do no good with the current BOC? They'll say we'll look into it and NOTHING HAPPENS? Until election time? That's about the only time you can get anything done? They want to be elected again so that's their way of buying votes? They do something for you and you vote for them.

E.J. : you post a good bit and most OK. Why don't you look into this stuff and write editoral ? Some of us have spoken and we get NOWHERE. Complain about dogs and where do you get ? We pay taxes and for that we should get service and those that do not pay there right share and could should not get this service.

Think you came to BOCA with someone else about this road in the past ? May be wrong. If this is you then listen to above posters and research and present to BOC again with your findings.

BUT Ditrt Road Dweller There is a difference between a Dirt road and a death trap? I have no problems with dirt roads BUT when driving down a dirt road becomes a risk of sliding off the road and getting hurt OR killed not to mention the damage to your car SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE?

This road is partially paved and some dirt and when wet horrible and side roads. Darn lets pave all and bankrupt county. I knew what I was buying and that weather and all made dirt part of road messy messy. Maybe I should build on paved area. NOPE.

Limited resources. When you have 10 people and each need a gallon of water per day but only 9 gallons there is going to be a problem. We are close to that issue and people who buy on dirt roads or in remote locations should not get more resources expended on them due to their personal decision. If increase taxes put more homes and farms and all into foreclosure and than lowers taxes and downward trend. Reason for the conservation tax "thing" as EJ notes is to help farms not end up in foreclosure but maybe this tax break beginning to cause more problems than expected as maybe not all really qualify. My view.

This is Gina here, responding to all the comments! Thank you for all the input! Yes, I knew it was a dirt road when I bought my property. Yes, I came from the city and had no idea what I was getting into. BUT, this isn't an issue of car maintenance or cleanliness. This about a road condition that is so bad that it puts drivers safety at risk. Is it fair that if we need emergency services that we should be deprived because we made a decision to live on a dirt road? If that is the case, then I should get the tax break for not getting what other tax payers recieve! I only asked for the road to be paved because obviously, the road dept can't keep up with the mainenance of the roads. Funny how they paved sections of 4th street this summer that had no potholes or problems - but they can't bring us a decent load of rock! About the conservation tax break - I looked it up - out of 15, 6 are on some kind of conservation tax break. Out of those 6, 3 own more than 100 acres. What that has to do with a road and a B.O.C. that will not respond to the needs of its constituents I do not know. That's their job, not mine.

gina ward- I agree with you and what if you were to slide off the road and flip your car over and while the Ambulance coming to pick you up WHAT IF IT WRECKS and can't get to your wreck because the road is in such bad shape??????????????

O.K. - one thing I have learned in the last 2 days...I'm wrong by placing blame on the road dept. I feel that the "system" for road repair and maintenance is at fault. Too many people getting upset and not knowing where to take their gripe. Like me! I am learning every day...

Yeah Anonymous there is more than one person to place the blame on here and not the road Dept. because lets face it they can't do nothing until they are told to do it? The blame lies on the Rd. Dept.heads, the BOC, OR the state? If the road Dept. submitted the request to the BOC and the BOC submitted the request to the state why hasn't something been done? The blame lies on one of these three Depts.

The state? They told me they would have nothing to do with county maintained roads. Do you know who to call? It's hard enough to get info about regulations or standards. I wish more residents of dirt roads would speak up, maybe then they would actually take us serious enough to make some changes. It upsets me that the public thinks they are powerless against a rural local gov't, he very gov't that we pay our taxes to and voted into office. They do have a boss - US!

Yes Anonymous you are right the state don't have nothing to do with county maintained roads SO I guess this falls back on the county? BUT the county is using the state as an escape goat? The county tells you it's the states fault and the state tells you it's the county who is responsible?
You know it's funny how the county don't want the state to have a say so on the county road in that county BUT they always try to put everything off on the state?
