BOC approves ‘Brain Awareness Month’ proclamation

Louise McElroy, Pilot Club International Foundation coordinator, stood before county commissioners March 7, asking the group to join the Pilot Club in promoting brain safety awareness. And the group approved a proclamation establishing March as “Brain Awareness Month.”

“The Pilot Club is tremendously involved in our community,” said BOC chairman Anthony Dove. “And we certainly appreciate all your efforts.”

The Pilot Club presents “brain minder” puppet shows at schools, the senior center and nursing homes to promote brain health. They sponsor car safety seat checks and certification for local citizens to conduct such checks. They support Fine Finish, the local organization that provides daytime services to mentally challenged adults in the county. They provide a scholarship for a special education student to attend ESP classes. They also sponsor a “Project Lifesaver” program that provides bracelets for the mentally challenged so that they can be located if they get lost.

“We encourage everyone to observe the special week and join us in celebrating the accomplishments made through brain research,” said McElroy.
