The Madison County United Way Advisory Board has exceeded its fundraising goal of $70,000 for the United Way of Northeast Georgia’s 2010 campaign. Board chairman Marvin White announced that the campaign has raised $74,895 so far. The campaign was chaired by Bonnie Knight of the Madison County School System, who was also named United Way of Northeast Georgia’s “county volunteer of the year” at the annual awards banquet, held on Feb. 1.
“This is tremendous news for those seeking services in Madison County and all of Northeast Georgia,” officials said. “Donations received from residents and businesses in the county help community members receive services from the many agencies supported by the United Way of Northeast Georgia.”
Last year, United Way support assisted over 4,067 individuals and provided 639,392 pounds of food to Madison County residents, according to a press release.
The 2010 campaign began Aug.25 with a kickoff celebration at The Classic Center in Athens. In addition to Tommy Jackson’s leadership as campaign chair, UGA sports icon Loran Smith served as the honorary campaign chair. This past year’s theme was “Live United,” and that is exactly what United Way donors pledged to do in their community by having their funds allocated to the 30 health and human service agencies United Way supports, officials stated.
“The United Way’s work is not over yet and donations and pledges are still coming in so there is still time to make your tax-deductible donation,” the press release stated. “There are more people in need of help this year than ever, so please consider making a donation to the campaign and helping the United Way of Northeast Georgia reach their goal and continue to provide aid to health and human service agencies in the eight-county area.”
