Storm sweeps through Madison County

A storm system that swept through northern Georgia, including Madison County, Monday night into early Tuesday morning brought reports of at least one structure fire, power lines down and numerous downed trees due to the high winds and lightning.

A mobile home at 195 Cedar Lane (off Collins Bridges Road) was destroyed by fire during the storm. No one was home at the time of the fire, according to assistant E-911 director Ricky Hix, who said the occupants returned Tuesday morning to find the home completely destroyed.

Downed power lines on Martin Griffeth Road, the 2400 block of Hwy. 29 North and on John Pruitt Road caused a number of power outages.

A vehicle struck a tree on Blacks Creek Church Road, but there were no injuries.

Hix said Madison County personnel, along with county volunteer firefighters, worked throughout the night to clear roads of down trees that were reported on Hwy. 98 West, Booger Hill Road, Cheek Pulliam Road, Pittman Matthews Road, New Hope Church Road, Stoyle-Hattaway Raod, South Avenue/Arnold Bottoms Road, Seagraves Mill Road, Piedmont Road, Rocky Branch Hollow Road, Shiloh-Ft. Lamar Road, Friendship Church Road, Cherokee Road, Fred Goss Road, 5200 block of Hwy. 29 North, Ben Crawford Road, Parham Town Road, Hill Street, 2900 block of Hwy. 106 South, Holly Avenue, Fowler Freeman Road and Crabapple Hollow Road.
