The kids’ clothes on the line by the county courthouse aren’t hanging out to dry. No, they’re symbols — dark symbols of indifference or meanness towards children.
Each one represents a child abuse or neglect case in Madison County in 2010.
Madison County leaders want to shed light on the problem of child abuse and neglect in the county. And county commissioners agreed April 4 to recognize April as “Child Abuse Prevention Month.”
Madison County Department of Family and Children Services director Lisa Plank spoke to commissioners, noting that DFCS investigated 249 reports of child abuse last year, substantiating that 54 children were abused or neglected.
The 54 shirts on display outside the county courthouse in downtown Danielsville represent substantiated cases of child abuse or neglect in Madison County in 2010. The black shirts represent fatalities.
