Alcohol might soon be sold on the Sundays in some Georgia communities, but don’t expect Madison County to be first in the beer line.
County commissioners say they’re not eager to bring beer and wine sales to the Sabbath here.
“I won’t even put it on the agenda — as far as my feelings on it,” said county commission chairman Anthony Dove. “Two commissioners would have to vote on it in an open session to put it on the agenda.”
Commissioner John Pethel said he doesn’t want to see any sales on Sunday.
“I don’t like it,” said Pethel. “In fact, I don’t like the selling of it Monday through Saturday. I’m absolutely opposed to Sunday sales.”
Georgia legislators approved a bill this legislative session that will give county and municipal governments the opportunity to put the Sunday-sale issue before local voters. Georgia is one of the few remaining states in the U.S. not to allow sale of alcohol on Sunday. That legislation is now awaiting approval by Gov. Nathan Deal, who has said he won’t veto such a measure.
Some communities, such as Loganville, are planning Sunday-sale referendums in November.
Commissioner Stanley Thomas said he would not be in favor of Sunday sales, but he said the issue of putting the matter before voters is a separate matter for the BOC. He said he has no plan to bring the matter up at the BOC table, but he’d have to consider approving a referendum if it was presented by someone else.
“If someone put it before us, I would look at it at that time,” said Thomas. “At that point you wouldn’t be voting for or against it. You would be voting on whether to allow people to have the freedom to vote.”
Commissioner Jim Escoe said he doesn’t drink and doesn’t associate with people who do, but he said he appreciates the legislature putting the matter before the people. He said he wants to see public meetings to allow citizens to express their thoughts on the matter.
“I don’t think I’d bring it up, but I wouldn’t want to stop people from exercising their right to vote,” said Escoe.
I applaud Mr. Thomas for his stand for freedom to let the voters decide. At least one of them has a spine.
I'm sure Clarke county is already counting the extra dollars that will come their way from good ol' Madison Cty. Land of the Hypocrite.
This is our Country and we own them not the other way around.
People are going to drink on the Sabbath anyway and doesn't the US Constitution guarantee us that we wont have Laws passed in favor of religion ?
Yes you have Freedom of Religion but we also have Freedom from Religion . If you argue that we don't and I am wrong then which religion is predominate and decides over all other religions ? Perhaps you might want to live under Shari Law then !!!
You can believe what you want to believe but your beliefs don't trump other peoples Liberty or Freedom to choose for themselves.
Let the people decide not you !!!!
I don't drink at all but I know the difference between right and wrong and I know well enough what principles this country was founded under !
Its this type of Fascists thinking that has led to the decline of freedom and liberty in this country.
I for one am a true American and will defend with my life your right to choose . Will you do the same for me?
Yes I certainly expect the radicals to jump on this one because they are nut jobs and have not a clue as to what true Spiritual Christianity is or true
American principles are !!! If we don't wake up in this Country and quit being so scared to speak the truth without fear ,then I think all hope is lost !!
Your God or Creator nor our Founders gave anyone or any group the right to persecute others because they disagree with their choices or beliefs ! I sure didn't give up my right to choose have you ? Its not where we are different that makes us strong but rather our choice to choose for ourselves what path in life we take provided we don't violate others freedoms
and do things to them against their will . If we don't have the right to choose for ourselves then how can we have what our Constitution guarantees us , The Pursuit Of Happiness. Its the one common thing that once made us such a great Nation . No matter who you are or where you come from
the one thing we all have in common is, we all want a better life. That is what this country was founded for .So for once do the right thing !
I cant speak for others but I liked it better when we had representative government not leaders . If you like leaders how do you like where we are being led now ?
First, Chairman Dove chose to take the low road in his pointed response to Commissioner Pethel at the last meeting concerning time keeping. Rather than taking the high road by keeping a sharp focus on the issue at hand, he chose to vent his personal feelings. While I fully understand the sensitivities that would prompt him to feel the need to defend himself against a perceived attack, a pubic meeting is not the place for that. The issue was time keeping; Chairman Dove should have let the issue run its course to defeat with the proper procedures, which he did, but without his personal footnote. Later, outside the official meeting, he could have made a statement to demonstrate his awareness of Commissioner Pethel’s “stirring it up” for “political purposes”. I would rather he have the maturity to simply let it go.
Secondly, Chairman Dove took the very first opportunity to make it clear that he was not going to propose a vote on Sunday alcohol sales now that the State of Georgia is allowing local control of this issue. ““I won’t even put it on the agenda — as far as my feelings on it,” said county commission chairman Anthony Dove.” Chairman Dove’s feelings are not the issue here. One would get the sense that Dove would curtail voter’s rights under state law just to support his own opinions. Apparently other commissioners would do the same. This seems highly un-American and un-patriotic. If they feel they are reflecting the majority view, then why would they be afraid to allow a vote? What are they afraid of? Put it out there and get this decided right away, one way or the other.
What practical difference would it make if alcohol were sold on Sunday? Even the liquor store owners know that they will sell no more overall by being open one more day, which they really do not want to do (and, of course, don’t have to). As it is now, people who failed to plan ahead for their booze at home will simply go out for alcoholic drinks by the glass and then drive home impaired. How nice. Remember Prohibition? Didn’t work! I don’t have anything to do with alcohol; if I could magically make it disappear from the face of the earth, I would. It causes so much misery and tragedy in so many ways. It’s here to stay, unfortunately, so we just have to deal with it as best we can.
One Georgia lawmaker wanted no sales on Sunday because Sunday was the Sabbath. Who’s Sabbath?? Saturday is the Jewish Sabbath, so we would have to stop all sales of alcohol on Saturday, too. And Wednesday, also, if there is some religion out there which honors Wednesday. This tells me that this issue is, to some extent, about religion, specifically Christianity. Is the Madison County commission attempting to inject religion into their governance? I hope not. Put it to the voters and get this over with now before the next election!
It's either being sold out of the back door of a country store or somebody with the entreprenural spirit has a stock that he is willing to sell. They will sell it to you on Sunday, they will sell it to you if you're underage. The only thing is... that these sales don't generate any tax revenue. That doesn't matter, really, as anti-business as Madison County is already what's a few thousand dollars of lost revenue here or there.
Now, if we could find a way to tax the pot and meth trade in Madison County. There's a business model that our leaders let run free.
Those who drink will simply buy it on saturday. The government is founded to work for the people and to follow their wishes - not the other way. So what are you guys afraid of? Let the people decide!
