Comer man arrested after fleeing officer
A Comer man was arrested after he fled from an officer who spotted him laying drags at the corner of North Avenue and Hwy. 22 in Comer recently.
Derryl Gene Benge, 50, 537 Watson Mill Road, was charged with driving while license withdrawn, fleeing or attempting to elude, DUI/alcohol, open container, laying drags, reckless driving, passing in a no-passing zone and improper passing on a hill/curve.
According to the incident report, officer Josh Fowler spotted Benge in a black Chevy 1500 laying drags and attempted to stop him. Benge allegedly took off down Hwy. 22 into Oglethorpe County, passing two vehicles on a hill in a no-passing zone with Fowler in pursuit. Benge turned onto Watson Mill Road and eventually stopped in a driveway. When Fowler asked him to exit the vehicle, he reportedly removed an open can of Ice House beer from between his legs and placed it on the floor of the vehicle. Benge told the officer he did not stop because he was scared since he had been drinking and did not have a valid license.
In another arrest, James Thomas Garrett, 70, of 791 Hwy. 72 East, Comer, was arrested on three counts of disorderly conduct last week after he reportedly continued to stop by an elderly woman’s home on Hwy. 29 North and say “vulgar and sexually explicit things” to her. The woman’s daughters reported he showed up at a family gathering uninvited and refused to leave. They said Garrett’s behavior has made their mother so fearful for her safety to the point that she physically shakes when he is around. The victim said she was afraid for her daughters’ safety if they confronted Garrett.

•Timothy Earl Fowler, 46, 2249 James Spring Road, Danielsville, was charged with criminal trespass and simple battery after his girlfriend said he had pushed her down inside and outside their house. She stated he also broke a glass table while trying to throw it outside. The officer noted that Fowler was intoxicated at the time of his arrest.
•Cindy Maria Robinson, 35, 3408 Della Slaton Road, Comer, was charged with DUI/alcohol after an officer was summoned to a domestic dispute on Hwy. 98 East between her and her boyfriend. The boyfriend said he became angry because Robinson had been “at the river” drinking and was intoxicated when his kids were with her. He said she had poured a beer on his head and left. Robinson said she had quit drinking several hours prior, but failed an alco-sensor test and appeared unsteady on her feet.
•Sidney Wayne Barber, 22, 275 Chester Lane, Colquitt, GA, DUI/alcohol, weaving over roadway and failure to have license on person.
•William Matthew Booth, 21, 940 Paoli Road, Carlton, probation violation.
•Whitney Michelle Bullock, 24, 2637 Danielsville Road, Athens, weaving over roadway, DUI/alcohol and endangering a child under 14 years old while DUI.
