Comer’s city council will make another attempt at regulating traffic in Chicken Alley.
Chicken Alley, also known as Center Street, is a narrow street that divides the compact downtown area running north and south. It is crossed by Park Avenue, another narrow street that runs east and west.
Each street consists of two blocks and crosses in the center of the district. Past efforts to regulate the streets consisted of one-way traffic on each street, but drivers found this to be a problem and basically ignored the signs.
Visibility is unrestricted on both streets. The council has decided to erect four-way stop signs at the crossing and let drivers work it out for themselves.
Other traffic work involves asking the DOT to help design a turning lane for Comer Elementary School and paving Clover street from Hwy. 98 to Paoli Road.
In other matters, a company from Alpharetta wants to install test equipment they are designing in the Comer treatment plant. They need two things. They want to check their equipment to see that it does what it is designed to do, and to obtain data to submit to the state for licensing purposes. The city engineers, Carter and Sloope, will be asked to form an opinion on the project.
The walking trail at Arnold Park is open and receiving steady use. The next project for the park is to install bleachers at the two softball fields.
The travel museum is ready for use and has already been booked for a couple of meetings.
The city council voted to donate $100 each to the Madison County Bicentennial Celebration, and to the Madison County Middle School Attendance Extravaganza.
The Comer Police Department made six arrests in April. They filed 27 citations and 14 incident reports. They investigated two accidents and answered 168 calls for service.
Hey City Council people are yall going to paint lines on the roads too? AND I just had a thought. Maybe the reason the people ignored the one way signs is BECAUSE THEY CAN'T READ THE SIGNS? I've heard for years that Comer is full of Uneducated backwoods Rednecks?
