The bats have been expelled from Carlton’s city hall, but new problems have been identified.
Vines have grown into the city’s severe weather warning siren causing irreparable damage.
City officials are investigating possible replacements for the siren, but the cost will be very high. Various models can cost anywhere from $15,000 to as much as $100,000. A grant would be necessary in order to replace it.
The current device was a civil defense surplus siren that was installed before 1974, according to city officials.
Officials also admitted that the city has no certified storm shelters. None of the current structures within the city can qualify as a safe location for a shelter. The nearest shelters are in Comer.
Recent storms have created another problem. Fifth Avenue, which is an unpaved street, has lost all its gravel. City manager Jerry Kemp said that the large gravel allows water to soak into the street causing the gravel to loosen. He suggested that the street be repaired with granite grindings and will ask the county road department for help.
Another problem involves water meters. Due to a recent change in the city’s billing system, all customers were billed the same as last month. However, the readings are still on file and the next bills will correct any errors.
And second: Good luck getting ANY HELP from the county Road Department???????????????? They can't even fix the roads already on the list??
When the last round of bad weather came through, me and my family discussed the storm shelter problem. There should be a number of known storm shelters in the area for people who do not have basements, but I've never heard a thing about them.
AND WE all found out about the road department when the Sam Bruce Rd. crap was going on and sounds like it's still going on today?
The reason you've probably never heard of storm shelters around Madison county is there ain't that many storms in this area to require a storm shelter but I think most government buildings and schools have them and they may be called Fall Out Shelters?
