LETTER: Obama confronts ugliness with grace, compassion

Dear Editor:

Joanne White is correct. Barack Obama is not our savior. Fortunately, he is just a man running for office who happens to be unusually astute, eloquent, and skilled at debate and respectful disagreement. On top of that, he appears to be dedicated to trying to make the world a better place.

It doesn’t matter what color his skin is, who his parents were, how big his ears are, or whether he has all the answers. For me, it is privilege enough to have a candidate who is articulate and broad-minded, who can see beyond quick fixes to solutions that are steeped in thoughtful, educated and carefully weighed analysis.

The disastrous tenure of George W. Bush and his henchmen is coming to a close. Obama has my vote and the vote of my 84-year old mother (who happens to be Causcasian and is not easily swayed by star power) because he has taken the initiative to respond to cynicism, greed, anti-intellectualism, cultural myopia and fear, with guts, grace and compassion.

No, he’s not my “savior,” but he is my candidate for president of this amazing and heart-broken country that I love so much.

i just hope that people are looking into the canidate themselfs and not voting for obama because of bush's failed policies!we do need a president that will help us out of the termoil that we all face as americans ( high gas prices and a poor economy among others )but we should take a good look into the canidates and be sure we are voting for the canidate that will help and not because we're ticked off at bush !

Why do many Obama supporters bring up his skin color? Personally, I don't think he is the skilled debater that some make him out to be. That is why his campaign has agreed to the minimal number of debates with McCain. The format moderated by Rick Warren was not a debate, but it did show that Obama had trouble thinking on his feet. Obama actually came across as a flake.

What is "Anti-intellectualism"? This is an elitist statement, insinuating that those who oppose Obama are not intellectual or uneducated. Remember, George W. Bush was a Yale graduate and actually maintained a higher GPA than John Kerry.

obama lost that Q&A format simply because of him far left liberal veiws! too many umm's he could not think fast enough to appease the crowd.. he is a great speaker and very smart but clearly not ready to lead this country!! he should have prepared himself for the conservitive crowd he was facing! however he could not erase the fact about his voting record on abortion ! i am a christian albeit maybe not a very good one but i am and have good morals...the issue of abortion goes further than a womans right to choose! most people agree thata woman has that right but if you factor in late term abortion thats where it takes a turn down a very dark path ... in my humble opinion there is no reason to carry a child for 8mths ( 6 7 9 ) for that matter and then go get a abortion but if a woman does then all steps should be taken if the baby is born alive in a botched abortion and barrack hussein obama blocked a bill that would have required it !
