Madison County small business owners in unincorporated areas of the county have until Sept. 1 to pay their occupation tax or “business license.”
Payments after Sept. 1 are subject to late fees, which is 10 percent of the amount due or $50 (whichever is greater). The county business license does not apply to commercial establishments within municipalities in Madison County.
Occupation tax fees are as follows:
•0-3 FT employees — $24.
•4-20 FT employees — $8 per employee.
•21-100 employees — $160 plus $6 per employee in excess of 20.
•100 or more FT employees — $640 plus $6 per employee in excess of 100.
According to building inspector Eddie Pritchett, the occupation tax deadline for large business owners was April 1, while owner/operators have until Sept. 1. Large business owners who missed the April 1 deadline will have to pay late fees.
Pritchett said the county has received occupation tax payments from 54 county businesses so far this year.
“There are still a lot of businesses that haven’t turned theirs (occupation tax) in,” said Pritchett.
The Occupation Tax Certificates (OTC) are issued out of the Building Inspection office. Their phone number is 706-795-6350. The mailing address is P.O. Box 1138 Danielsville, GA 30633. Information is also available on the web at www.madisoncountyga.us click on departments, then Occupation Tax.
“One of the reasons to have this Occupation Tax Ordinance is to help businesses who do business out of town which are asked to produce an OTC or business license,” said Pritchett. “The OTC will also allow us to establish a list of local businesses on our website, almost like free advertising.”
