The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is looking for one of two inmates who escaped the Madison County Jail Saturday night.
Russell Frank Massey remains on the loose, while fellow escapee Jason Lee Hattaway, 34, has been apprehended without incident, according to the sheriff’s office.
Massey is described as a 31-year old white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 165 pounds, with shaggy medium length brown hair and blue eyes.
According to sheriff Kip Thomas, the men, who were cellmates, escaped the jail Saturday night around 10 p.m. after somehow getting one of the doors popped open to an outside recreation yard.
From there, they tore a hole in the fence and then scaled the outer perimeter fence before escaping on foot.
Thomas said the escape was discovered within 15 minutes or so after the jail was breached.
Law enforcement searched the area and posted the escapees’ pictures on the Madison County Sheriff’s Facebook page over the weekend.
A tip came in by phone on Sunday about Hattaway’s whereabouts at a residence in nearby Banks County.
Banks County Sheriff’s deputies, along with Georgia State Patrol and a Lowndes County ICE team, assisted Madison County in apprehending Hattaway at the residence without incidence.
“We really appreciate their assistance with this,” Thomas said.
Hattaway was in jail on a June 4 “order to incarcerate” charge for child support.
He has previous arrests on his record for forgery and probation violations.
Massey was arrested in mid-May at Tommy James Mobile Home Park on Ed Coile Road on drug and marijuana charges, along with a charge of felony interference with government property .
According to the May 18 incident report, when officers arrived at the mobile home park with an arrest warrant, Massey jumped out a bedroom window and ran into a field while throwing objects, later found to be methamphetamine, out of his pocket.
If you know Massey’s whereabouts or have any information on about him, contact the sheriff's office at (706) 795 2101.
How much longer 'til we can vote in a real sheriff and get rid of this clown?
This news-gathering group needs a follow-up article to finish the story and not next month.
If the escape was Saturday night why are we just now hearing about it? Did the Sheriff just now inform the newspaper about the escape? I would think the people who live near the jail would like to know as soon as possible when there are escaped inmates running around their neighborhood.
I feel a deputy injuried in the line of duty should have a job until he decided to leave. If unable to physically complete the job he should have a job in dispatch, etc...
What happened to Mr. Williams?
I agree for a deputy to get shot in the line of duty he should never have to worry about his job again ! WAKE UP KIP !!!! I think this maybe the nail in your coffin for reelection !!!!!!!
I can't wait until 2012. Should be very interesting, to say the least.
