A man who escaped from the Madison County Jail Saturday night is now back in custody.
According to sheriff Kip Thomas, Russell Frank Massey, 32, surrendered to Elbert County sheriff’s deputies Thursday morning about 8:15 a.m.
Thomas said Massey reportedly contacted a bail bondsman from Hart County early Thursday morning and asked him to come pick him up from a location in the woods around Lake Russell.
The bondsman then transported Massey to the Elbert County Sheriff’s Department where he surrendered to authorities.
Thomas said Massey stole a white Ford pick up from a residence along Hwy. 98 near the Madison County jail after his escape Saturday night and then abandoned it a short distance away on Johnson Bridge Road.
From there, Thomas said he somehow escaped into Elbert County, where he stole another pick up from a granite shed on Hwy. 17 on Tuesday.
That truck was found abandoned Wednesday on Harper’s Ferry Road near Lake Russell.
Law enforcement had been searching that area since then.
“He said he’d been in the woods the whole time and he looks like he has been,” Thomas said.
Thomas said Massey and fellow escapee Jason Lee Hattaway, 34, are now facing charges of felony escape and interference with government property.
Massey will also be charged with two counts of theft by taking motor vehicle.
Other charges may also be pending.
Massey and Hattaway escaped about 10 p.m. Saturday night by popping a fire door open, tearing a hole through a recreation yard fence and then scaling the outer perimeter fence at the jail.
Hattaway was captured without incident Sunday at a location in Banks County.
Get your "inquiring " mind on the conservation tax thing. Yes I am one of those on board as is my neighbor that intend to keep reminding you good person. OH : if no TV can use the internet for more than posting here.
Same ole song and dance.....The people of Madison County are seriously lucky there have been no more than this. If I recall I think this is the second time they have had an escape there. So what does this tell you: Somebody isn't doing their job. Lets name them: The jailors, the shift supervisors, the jail commander, the chief deputy, last but not least the kid with the title of sheriff. Lets face it, not many of them even have jail experience. How can you contain if you don't have a clue how. How can you solve murders if you don't have a clue how. Lets face it. Once again, this admin is in need of change again. It never got better from the previous, only worse. Sort of like Obama, its taking the voters three years to see through the sheep's wool. Good bye Obama, Good bye Kip Thomas. I supported you, I supported Obama. I made a mistake. Not to be ugly, not intended. Said this as nicely as I can. Now let the attacks begin, I'm sure they will. As far as my vote next year it will be for anyone running against the above mentioned. Thats my right and I hope my vote makes a difference.
