Danielsville’s mayor and council set up a “name clearing” hearing at the beginning of the June 13 regular council meeting for the three employees they fired last month, but the hearing was cancelled because none of them attended.
City attorney Dale Perry said he sent certified letters about the scheduled hearing to former city clerk Connie Riley, former police chief Rodney Christian and maintenance supervisor Scott Anglin. “Let the record show it’s 7:07 p.m. and none of them are here,” he said.
Also June 13, council members expressed their gratitude to their remaining employees, their temporary staff and new employees. Councilman Ron Faust said he wanted to thank the employees for “doing what it takes” to get the city back on its feet following the recent firings and resignations.
The council also gave maintenance worker Daniel Turk a $2 an hour increase in pay following a closed session for his employee review.
Mayor Philip Croya thanked Comer police chief Brent Zellner and officer Cliff Moody for agreeing to serve as temporary police officers for Danielsville.
Croya said that citizens seem to like the new setup, which he said has given Danielsville coverage seven days a week, including nights and weekend coverage.
Croya added that he wants the council to discuss hiring a new full-time police chief at the work session later this month.
OTHER MATTERS
In another matter, the council voted to renew its property and liability insurance contract with GIRMA (Georgia Interlocal Risk Management Agency) at an annual cost of $23,955. The council instructed the administrative staff to pay one-half the premium now and the other half in 30 days.
Councilwoman Junne Temple told the council that she cancelled an order with Pontem Company for cemetery management software.
The council also discussed the purchase, or lease, of a new copier for City Hall, but agreed to get more prices before making a decision. Temple said Graham Office Products has provided the office with a loaner for the time being, and instructed city clerk Suzanne Ferguson to inquire about paying a rental fee for its continued use.
The administrative staff was also instructed to obtain a list of streetlights the city is being billed for by Georgia Power Company.
The council tabled or took no action on a number of other items on Monday’s agenda, including a budget resolution, the spending policy, the first draft of the city code, a flexible benefit plan, and the purchase of a safe for City Hall.
Mayor Croya said he had a “real need for a safe right now.”
“I have some stuff I need to lock up,” Croya said. The council agreed to discuss the matter again at its monthly work session.
Finally, the council agreed that it may need to set up a special called meeting to consider the issue of a variance for The Medicine Shoppe pharmacy. Temple said business owner George Elrod asked about a variance three months ago, and that the request had not been taken care of as she had thought, so if possible, she would like to get the matter settled within the month.
All of you who say the Mayor was right to do this. Let me ask you WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE FIRED THIS WAY? If I was hired by text message it would be fine BUT if I was hired in person then I should be fired in person? Did they conduct the interviews by text message? NO the people wanting the job had to go in in person for the interview. AND the Mayor wants everyone to respect him BUT he can't even respect the people he wants to fire by looking them in the eyes? This all has the sounds of a teenage high school spat?Mr. Mayor you ain't in high school no more.
I didn't understand what was being said, therefore, the writer did not get their point across, so they failed to be heard by me. That, of course, is no disaster in the great scheme of things.
At least one terminated employee responded to the text saying he wouldn't come to the meeting, which was during working hours, because he was going to his kid's game, a breach of proper employee conduct in and of itself. He had his chance for a face-to-face. I forget the stories about the others.
I'm afraid I can't figure out what this sentence means. ".... one of the above ...." What? Commenters? Commissioners? New employees? Fired employees? What?
".... as public employee should possibly have been different."
I can't even guess at this. Punctuation might help. When writing, readers can't hear your pauses, inflections and tone. So clue us in, please. Maybe you are accustomed to talking inside your own head too much. Try to get outside yourself and you might have more impact on the world.
I have a question. Did prior Police chief have as many or close to as many stops as others. If that is the case maybe something to the stop issue. Not sure what it is though. Does anyone ( bet old EJ does ) know ?
Hall county having lay offs to help with budget. Now time for county to look at high paid employee people and if the department bloated then cut them.
I am tired of being taxed when services I see are just not worth what I am paying. I feel like I work for the MC employees who have better benefits and vacation. I work 60+ hours week. Time for these MC employees all to take a 20% cut or county lets 10% go and reduce our taxes. Teachers need a pay cut and school tax needs reducing. I NEED TAX relief.
Why are you shouting with all those capital letters? You sound incredibly angry like you have lost it.
PEEP this if they started speaking they would have been shut down then if they tried to keep speaking the law would have been called and they would be arrested for disturbing a BOC meeting then they would forever be known as a trouble maker?
How would yall like for the President to conduct business by text message? How would you like for him to decide and discuss things that concern the American people and YOU by text message?
It was very clear to me the writer felt an encounter with one of the fired employees demonstrated a lack of professional courtesy.
I'll be happy to step in translate other instances of ungrammatical English for you. It's terrible to see a grown-up suffer over improper punctuation. Help is available!
AND TO ALL OF YOU who say it was ok for the Mayor to conduct business like this. Let me ask you Would you like to work somewhere for years and your boss send you a text message telling you that you were fired? If so then this is sad what this world has become from when a mans word was his bond?
Did you mean, "YOU'RE fired?"
Idiot.
In an effort to be helpful the following would be my suggestion:
My experience with one of the fired employees was less than warm and fuzzy; a public employee should be more accommodating.
AGREED!
An appeal hearing by any other name should have been provided by the city with a 3rd party hearing officer who would hear both sides.(behind closed doors)
That would give both sides equal footing. To hold it as stated and for that to be published smacks of a circus and or lack of knowledge in employee law by the city attorney.
With all that said this is an at will state and the chances of winning such an appeal are slim to none. Same with appealing unemployment compensation.
Mayor Croya needs to learn a little tact and diplomacy going forward if he wishes to succeed in public office.
'nuff said.
