In an effort to keep costs down, classrooms in county schools are likely to be a little more crowded this coming school year.
The board of education approved class size waivers at its regular business meeting June 14 that will allow an increase in the number of students in all classrooms for the 2011-12 school year.
Class sizes can increase by up to three students in regular kindergarten through 12th grade classrooms. Class size can also increase by up to three students in the Early Intervention Programs (EIP), vocational, alternative and special education classes, while class size can increase by up to seven students in gifted and remedial classes.
The state BOE granted class size exemptions to local boards for the 2011-12 school year, since they were unable to appropriate funds to pay for the current statutory class size maximums.
In another matter, the board approved the school calendar for the upcoming school year. School will begin on Aug. 5 and end on May 18. The days prioritized for make up days in case of snow or inclement weather are Feb. 17, Feb. 20 and March 12.
Due to reduced funding, pre-K classes will begin later in the school year on Aug. 29, but will then follow the school calendar for the rest of the year.

Superintendent Allen McCannon presented a new expense reimbursement policy for travel for school system employees.
McCannon explained that the new policy, if approved by the board in July, will no longer include reimbursement for meals and will limit reimbursements for lodging to $120 per night.
McCannon said this is a way to reduce travel expenses without limiting travel to education-based meetings, conferences and the like.
